Every nine minutes in this country, a child under the age of six has to go to the emergency room because of accidental medication poisoning, and every twelve days a child dies. CarolAnn Brown, Curator of Exhibitions at Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA), recently announced her resignation to pursue independent artistic projects. Ms. Brown served as LCA's curator for 12 years. During her tenure she mounted exhibitions that explored intriguing themes such as relationships between humans and animals in "The Hunt, The Prey The Spirit" and "Magical Realism". The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the closure of all lanes of U.S. 20 (Indianapolis Blvd.) in East Chicago, between Chicago Ave. and 145th Street, going on now through Friday, March 23. This closure is necessary so East Chicago city crews can complete sewer work.    

This past Friday, members of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Jail Administration received information that an inmate within the jail was in possession of a cellular telephone. Upon receiving this information, an investigation was immediately launched and Sheriff’s Office Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Division were called upon to assist. The investigation quickly progressed throughout the day and turned to an employee of Advanced Correctional Healthcare (ACH). The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the closure of SR 149 at the Indiana Toll Road bridge, located between CR 1000N and Leeper Drive near Portage. The closure began today, March 19 and will continue through mid-June. This is necessary as Indiana Toll Road crews rehabilitate the Indiana Toll Road bridge at SR 149. The Michigan City, Refuse Department will conduct its Annual Spring Clean-Up beginning on March 26th. The Refuse Department requests that all residents separate the debris that is to be discarded into the following three (3) categories: Brush, limbs, shrubs, yard waste, and unpainted concrete (no black-top rubble); Rugs, lumber, furniture, mattress, and box-springs; and Appliances and tires. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is encouraging Hoosiers to plan ahead for weather events as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, March 18-24. Planning and preparation can minimize weather-related deaths, injuries and property damage. Indiana counties are finalizing damage assessments and the State has requested a federal review, which is the next step in the process for requesting federal assistance. No federal assistance has been granted for Indiana residents. On Wednesday at around 5:00 pm, officers with the South Bend Police Department were dispatched to Memorial Hospital in reference to a shooting victim. Officers were also dispatched to the 1900 block of Freemont in reference to shots fired. When they arrived at the hospital, officers found 23 year old Henry Turner, suffering from gunshot wound. Turner was rush ed to surgery by hospital personnel. Because of the severity of his injuries, the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) was activated, per protocol. Doctors and medical providers were able to stabilize Mr. Turner, who is now expected to survive.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) voted for bipartisan legislation to provide schools with resources for training, technology, and coordination with law enforcement to help identify warning signs, prevent violence, and keep students safe. The Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act (H.R. 4909) creates a grant program to improve school safety and security. It passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 407 to 10. Valparaiso Police were called to 401 Galway Dr. for a possible burglary in progress at 10:25 a.m. Thursday morning. An alert individual called police when they located two suspicious individuals and a vehicle at a neighbor’s house. The caller knew the homeowners were not home at the time. 36 year old Ricky Mcabee of Gary and 28 year old Aaron Swelfer of Merrillville were taken into custody. Both subjects are being held at the Porter County Jail on charges of Burglary level 4 felony.

Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) Secretary Dr. Jennifer Walthall and Indiana Executive Director for Drug Prevention, Treatment and Enforcement Jim McClelland announced a new tool to help Hoosiers seeking treatment for substance use disorder immediately connect with available inpatient or residential treatment services. In St. Joseph County Indiana 39 year old Christopher David King, appeared before a St. Joseph County Superior Court judge Friday for sentencing after his guilty plea—without agreement—to the single count filed in the information, Causing Death when Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .15 or More, a Level 4 Felony. That charge involves a sentencing range of 2 to 12 years, with a 6 year advisory sentence. King was sentenced to a ten (10) year sentence after the hearing.
