The City of La Porte is seeking feedback on a new plan that outlines the future of the community, according to Community Development & Planning Director Craig Phillips. In less than two weeks, City will host two public open house events to engage residents in the development of a comprehensive plan. Sewer/Roadway Repair Status on White Oak Drive in Michigan City

In Michigan City, a local contractor has completed emergency repairs to the sanitary sewer system on White Oak Drive, south of Greenwood Avenue.  The emergency repairs were needed to fix a failing manhole that contributed to a severe dip in the White Oak Drive roadway. The City anticipates the asphalt plants will reopen in early April. In the interim, with the option of repaving the roadway cut with asphalt currently not available to the city, in consultation with the City Engineer’s Office the Sanitary District of Michigan City has instructed that the roadway repair be temporarily completed with compacted aggregate

Pedestrian struck and killed by train at South Calumet Road grade crossing in Chesterton

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train at the Norfolk Southern grade-crossing on South Calumet Road in Downtown Chesterton Friday evening, Friday, Feb. 28, the Town of Chesterton reported to their Facebook page Friday night. The incident occurred at 7:02 p.m. Assistant Police Chief Cisco Rodriquez described the victim as an adult male but could provide no further information at this time, pending notification of family and the results of the ongoing investigation.

Hoosier Helper Vehicle Struck While Assisting Motorist on I-80

Gary- This morning at approximately 7:00 a.m., an INDOT Hoosier Helper stopped on I-80/94 eastbound at the 7.7 mile-marker to assist a stranded motorist with changing a flat tire on the right shoulder. This location is east between Burr and Grant St. The Hoosier Helper vehicle had all of its rear-facing emergency lights activated while the tire was being changed. Update: Body was found on I-65 near Crown Point

A body was found on I-65 near Crown Point. The latest from The Indiana State Police-Lowell Post. Crown Point- This morning at 9:20 a.m., a cleanup crew was working on I-65. As they were working along the ramp from U.S. 231 to southbound I-65, they located a body laying in the west ditch. Troopers and Detectives from the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post responded to the scene. Lake County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force seizes narcotics, including fentanyl, from Gary man

The Lake County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force - Regional Enforcement Team conducted an operation on Wednesday that led to the arrest of a Gary man and the seizure of several narcotics from a Merrillville apartment. The Regional Enforcement Team is comprised of police officers from multiple agencies, including a Merrillville detective who is assigned to the task force. The enforcement was the result of a four-month investigation into the illegal activities of 43-year-old D’Andre Hall, who was suspected of dealing cocaine and crystal meth. Hall is a convicted felon and was on probation for two previous Drug Task Force cases.

Motorist and flagger altercation, driver later arrested

On Tuesday at around 10:24 a.m., Deputies Ken Etchison and Josh Smith responded to the area of Wozniak Road and Surrey Lane regarding a verbal altercation between a motorist and a  27-year-old flagger of a service company performing work in the area.  The vehicle left the area following the altercation. Yesterday at approximately 1:52 PM, a Highway Interdiction Deputy was monitoring westbound traffic on the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) near the 52-mile marker. The deputy observed a black Jeep sport utility vehicle (SUV) pass by him traveling less than one (1) car length behind a commercial motor vehicle in the westbound driving lane. In the area of the 42-mile marker, the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the SUV. The SUV began to yield to the right but suddenly accelerated and continued westbound. Town of Chesterton: INDOT agrees to conduct safety study of U.S. 20

The Town of Chesterton announced on its Facebook page Tuesday that the LaPorte District of the Indiana Department of Transportation acceded to the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission’s request to conduct a safety study of U.S. 20.
