The Porter County Health Department will host their first-ever Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, August 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Portage High School- Portage Indiana. This free event is open to all ages and will include community vendor booths, free health services, safety demonstrations, giveaways, food trucks and family-friendly activities. La Porte police officers recovered a stolen van and arrested the suspect on Tuesday. Officers were dispatched to E Street early Tuesday for a reported vehicle theft. A witness saw a man flee in the van around 6:30 a.m. Using Flock cameras, officers located the vehicle on McClung Road. A felony stop was initiated, and the driver, Joshua D. Murray, was taken into custody. Murray is facing charges including theft - vehicle / prior conviction, resisting law enforcement causes bodily injury and motor vehicle- driving while suspended- prior suspension within 10 years. The La Porte Police Department activated its SWAT Team to arrest a man who had multiple felony warrants. On Tuesday morning the La Porte Police Department SWAT Team, with assistance from members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended 21-year-old Kyron Meriweather-Burks on multiple outstanding felony arrest warrants. The charges include domestic battery, strangulation, and armed robbery. The Indiana Natural Resources Commission (NRC) Wednesday granted final adoption of rules overseeing carbon sequestration and carbon dioxide transmission pipelines. Carbon sequestration involves the capture of carbon dioxide produced through industrial facilities and its injection deep underground into porous rock, with the purpose of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2022, the Indiana General Assembly passed legislation (HEA 1209-2022) to allow for carbon sequestration projects in Indiana, and in 2023, passed legislation (HEA 1626-2023) directing the DNR to adopt rules for their implementation. In Porter County, an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor has begun a pipe lining project on State Road 49 between U.S. 6 and C.R. 600 N. Work has begun with shoulder closures in the area until approximately early August for pre-phase construction activities. There will then be alternating lane closures from early August through mid-October. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. PORTER COUNTY, Ind. -- The Chesterton Fire Department was one of multiple agencies responding to Sagers Lake on Monday afternoon, after a paddleboarder went missing, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported according to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page. Just before 5:20 p.m. the CFD and others were dispatched to Sagers Lake—located northeast of the intersection of Sager Road and Martinal Road—after the 63-year-old Illinois man was seen to go underwater and not surface. The City of Valparaiso on Monday celebrated the grand opening of their newest pickleball facility — the ValPlayso PicklePlex. The upgrade brings six new pickleball courts next to ValPlayso Park. Located next to ValPlayso Park, the new PicklePlex is part of the $10 million RePlay initiative by Valpo Parks, which is upgrading 10 parks citywide this season.
