Bylaws approved for a Chesterton Park Foundation

The Chesterton Town Council voted unanimously at its meeting Monday night, June 10, to approve bylaws for a Chesterton Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Town of Chesterton announced on its Facebook page. “The creation of a park foundation has long been sought by the Park Board as well as friends of Chesterton’s municipal parks,” the Town of Chesterton said. “Park foundations have the potential to act as the catalysts of significant capital improvements to a park system’s holdings. The South Shore line announced Thursday that busing between the Miller and Dune Park Stations have concluded ahead of schedule. MCPD officers presented Life Saving Awards and Letters of Commendation

The Michigan City Police Department Administration presented officers with Life Saving Awards and Letters of Commendation Thursday at the Michigan City Police Commission meeting. Assistant Chief Steve Forker and Officer Anthony Santoro were presented with Life Saving Awards. Railroad crossing on Jackson Street to close in Michigan City

Porter County Expo Center issues scam alert on fake hot air balloon event

The Porter County Expo has issued a scam alert about a scam involving a fake prepaid hot air balloon show. Vandalism incidents at Chesterton town parks and businesses solved: three juveniles charged

The Chesterton Police Department says it successfully concluded an investigation into a series of spray paint vandalism incidents that occurred between June 3 and June 6. The acts of vandalism were reported at several Chesterton Town Parks and businesses in the 200 block of S. Calumet Avenue, the 200 block of Broadway, and the 1500 block of Broadway. During the early morning hours of Thursday, June 6, the Chesterton Police Department's patrol division responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Broadway and 15th Street. I-94 traffic configurations to change for bridge work

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will move to the next phases of bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance work on I-94 eastbound and westbound near U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd and Kennedy Ave. Motorists should be prepared for overnight lane closures on or around Thursday, June 13 on westbound I-94 to install a new traffic configuration. NIPSCO Expands Use of Advanced Metering Infrastructure Technology with Multi-Year Gas Meter Installation Project

Update: Lane closures – U.S. 6 in Porter County, project to begin on/after Mon, June 17

U.S. 6 will have alternating lane closures for resurfacing between State Road 149 and State Road 49 on or after Monday, June 17 through late August. There will be alternating lane closures, and flaggers will direct traffic in the area where work is occurring. INDOT says to be prepared for changing traffic patterns, and delays during peak times.

State Road 39 reopened between U.S. 6 and County Road West 800

South in La Porte County following two railroad crossing upgrades. INDOT is reminding the public that railroad crossings are not maintained by INDOT. Their INDOT says their Northwest rail coordinator first worked with Grand Trunk Western Railroad Company (the north crossing closer to U.S. 6) to replace their crossing years ahead of schedule and to upgrade the crossing materials. He was then able to work with CSX Transportation to also rebuild their crossing at the same time, avoiding having to close this same stretch of road multiple times.

LaPorte County Family YMCA introduces new wellness coordinator

At the LaPorte County Family YMCA, Kate Triemstra is taking on the role of Wellness Coordinator. Since 2016, Kate has been an instructor, offering a variety of classes from yoga to weightlifting to Tabata. She was previously a Live Strong coach. The YMCA says she’s excited to bring back this program along with others like Diabetes Prevention. “In her new role, Kate is looking forward to enhancing the wellness programs across all YMCA branches,” the YMCA said on its Facebook page. “If you have ideas for new classes or programs, please reach out and share them at ktreimstra@lpymca.org.”

MICHIGAN CITY, IN —Unity Foundation of La Porte County is accepting applications online for its 2024 Community “Power for Good” Grants through Friday, July 19. Organizations may apply for up to $5,000 to fund projects that strengthen La Porte County in meaningful ways.
