The Porter County Health Department on Thursday issued a public notice of a petroleum release, spill or overfill. The Department stated the following in a press release: Local health departments are required by statute (IC 13-23-16) to inform the public of the discovery of released regulated substances at an underground storage tank site or in the surrounding area under 329 IAC 9-4-1 (1) or a spill or overfill under 329 IAC 9-4-4 (a). The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) was notified on December 18, 2024, of such an incident from the owner or operator of the Speedway #6675 facility

A missing man was found on Tuesday thanks to Portage Police Corporal Overton and K9 Bane. Police say the man, who is in his 70s and has dementia, crashed his car and walked away into a wooded area, as he was confused. Several hours later, police were called and made aware of the incident. Overton and K9 Bane arrived on scene to attempt a track into the woods. The man was found 20 minutes and almost half a mile later and was able to get medical help for hypothermia.

A 26-year-old from Illinois man is facing criminal charges after fleeing from Indiana police into Chicago with a 4-year-old in the vehicle. Just after 5 p.m.Tuesday, Highland police attempted to perform a traffic stop on a BMW in Hammond.  The officers were participating in a joint law enforcement operation involving multiple agencies. A Wisconsin man was arrested after a police pursuit according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department. Last Friday Dec. 13, at 11:45 a.m., a deputy was monitoring traffic along the south side of U.S. 20 near Springville Road.  The deputy observed an SUV traveling eastbound at a higher rate of speed than other traffic, and the driver not restrained by a seatbelt.  The Deputy began to travel eastbound on US 20 behind the SUV.  Upon approach of the Fail Road intersection, it was determined the SUV was traveling in excess of the 45 miles per hour posted speed limit.
