Markey and Braun Introduce Legislation to Require Warning Labels on Addictive Prescription Opioid Painkillers, Mandate Education for Prescribers of Opioids

Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) introduced two pieces of bipartisan legislation yesterday to help combat the opioid epidemic. The first bill, the Lessening Addiction By Enhancing Labeling (LABEL) Opioids Act, calls for labeling prescription opioid bottles with a consistent, clear, and concise warning that opioids may cause dependence, addiction, or overdose. The second piece of legislation, the Safe Prescribing of Controlled Substances Act, requires any prescriber of opioid medication to undergo mandatory education on safe prescribing practices. Traffic Stop Leads To Felony Firearms Violation Arrest

Monday during the early afternoon, Deputy John Roby Jr. was monitoring westbound traffic in the 3000 east block of US 20. While doing so, he observed a passenger vehicle committing a traffic infraction. A short time later, Deputy Roby initiated a traffic stop along US 20 near Wilhelm Road. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 25 year old Donald R. Brewster Jr. As the traffic stop progressed, Deputy Roby determined Brewster had never been issued a driver’s license. Two Crashes On US 20 on Tuesday

On Tuesday, May 14th, just before 5:30 A.M., Sheriff's Office Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of US 20 and Fail Road reference a crash involving two commercial motor vehicles and two passenger vehicles. The crash investigation revealed three vehicles were stopped in the westbound lanes of US 20 waiting for the traffic control device to cycle at the intersection. The vehicle, a Peterbilt tractor, being driven by 33 year old Melvin Smith Jr. of Oak Park, Illinois, was traveling west on US 20. Smith advised deputies that he observed the vehicles stopped but was unable to stop in time

Indiana Department of Education Announces 2018-2019 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program School of the Year

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced Tuesday South East Neighborhood School of Excellence has been named the 2018-2019 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program School of the Year. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is a federally assisted grant program providing students free fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day. South Shore Line: Eastbound Train 205 Canceled For Several Weeks

Beginning Monday, May 20th, Eastbound Train 205, departing at 6:48a from Millennium Station to Gary Metro Center, will be canceled due to construction near the East Chicago Station that will impact track availability. New Carlisle Man Convicted Following 2-Day Jury Trial

Following a 2-Day Jury Trial, 62 year old Kevin Clinton, of New Carlisle, was convicted on 4 counts of mail fraud. U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Man Wanted By LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Since 2015 Arrested In Chicago

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the arrest of 50 year old Lee T. Hall. Last Friday, Hall was located and taken into custody in the 6300 south block of Ellis Street in Chicago, Illinois by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST) and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. In 2015, a criminal arrest warrant was issued for Hall for one (1) count of Child Solicitation, a Level 5 Felony.  Since then, Hall had eluded authorities and his location was not known. Burns Harbor Acquires Westport Development Site

The Burns Harbor Redevelopment Commission has acquired land for development near the former Westport Community Center. A partnership between the RDC and Holladay Properties led to the 32-acre purchase from the Duneland School Corporation. The property lies along State Road 149 and Haglund Road.RDC President Eric Hull says the site is where the founders incorporated the town in 1969.The project will be done in phases, with a pre-development phase kicking off the plans to allow for integration of prior Town plans.
