INDOT Kicks off 2019 Paint the Plow Campaign

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the kick off of its 2019 Paint the Plow campaign, a community outreach program designed to promote safety and awareness of INDOT’s Winter Operations all year long.Each INDOT District invites art classes/programs from middle and high schools to paint an INDOT snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their school. Citizens Advised to Stay Off of Frozen Lakes and Ponds

Indiana Conservation Officers are advising citizens across the state of the potential hazards of being on frozen lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams this winter. Recent temperature drops across the state have brought about sheets of ice across some bodies of water. Indiana Conservation Officers say the best rule of thumb is, when walking on ice, to believe you are “walking on thin ice.” Wearing a life jacket is especially important when on the ice. Governor Appoints Executive Director of IN State Board of Education

On Tuesday, Gov. Eric J. Holcomb said he has appointed Dr. Lee Ann Kwiatkowski as interim executive director of the Indiana State Board of Education to replace Matt Voors, who has accepted a position outside of state government. Dr. Kwiatkowski will continue to be the governor’s senior education adviser. The board will review the governor’s appointment during its February 6 business meeting.

Senators Reintroduce Bill Boosting Agriculture Education

Update On Monday’s Shooting In La Porte

On Monday the LaPorte Police responded to a residence in the 1100 blk. of Clay St. in reference to a shooting. The female victim that was shot was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis. The current condition of the victim is that she is stable and appears that she will recover. The suspect, 37 year old Ronald Means was located in Griffith Indiana in Lake County around 3:30 PM on Tuesday and was taken into custody without incident. La Porte Police Investigating Shooting

On Monday, officers from the La Porte Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1100 blk. of Clay St. around 9:30 p.m. for a report of a possible shooting. One female victim was located inside the residence with what appeared to be at least one gunshot wound. Initial reports are that there was a verbal altercation between the female victim and male suspect who fled prior to officers arrival. Officers rendered aid to the victim and secured the scene for detectives. The female victim is in stable condition at a hospital in Indianapolis. At this time it appears

Michigan City Conducting Additional Testing of Contamination Plume from Concord Cleaners

On August 16, 2018, Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer announced that the City would seek to conduct air testing in all residences in a four block area bounded by Tryon Street, Walker Street, Michigan Boulevard, and 8th Street, in an effort to determine if vapors from the former Concord Cleaners ground water contamination plume are entering homes in this area. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Announces Hiring of Five New Merit Deputies

La Porte County Sheriff John T. Boyd announced the recent hiring of five new Merit (Patrol) Deputies. The deputies will fill vacancies within the Merit Division that were recently open. Krueger Announces Geo Bee Winners

Approximately 360 students at Krueger Middle School participated in the school-level competition of the National Geographic GeoBee in late November/early December. The top 10 students advanced to the final school competition. On December 12, Wyatt Bauer, a 7th grade student, won first place; Issac Williams, an 8th grade student, took second, and James Symons, a 7th grade student, finished third.The school-level competition is the first round in the annual National Geographic GeoBee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Sixteen Year Old Shot and Killed In South Bend, Investigation Ongoing

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is continuing the investigation regarding the homicide on N. Brookfield in South Bend, occurring January 13th. The shooting victims have been identified as Ajurin Blake (deceased), 16 years of age, and an 18 year old. Family notification has been completed. There is no suspect information to release at this time, and no arrests have been made. The investigation into the death of Ajurin Blake, and shooting of Nehemiah Watts is active and ongoing.
