Members Advantage Credit Union (MACU) donated $500 to the Steady Stitchers in an effort to aid people in need in the local community. The Steady Stitchers, a local non-profit organization, has been operating for over nine years. Through generous donations of fabric and finances, volunteers are able to use their sewing skills to create various items for fellow residents who need help or are going through a difficult time. The Steady Stitchers holds four community “Lend A Hand” events per year at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds. South Shore Line will be offering 10% discounts on monthly passes during the month of March.During the polar vortex, South Shore Line services were suspended for several days due to the extreme temperatures. Crews ran tests throughout the day and night during this time to determine whether rail lines were safe. Unfortunately, the record-breaking temperatures caused problems ranging from downed electrical lines on South Shore Line’s tracks to damage on Metra Electric District tracks that the SSL runs on in Illinois, resulting in cancelled service on both train lines. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson awarded $74 million to hundreds of public housing authorities across the country to continue helping public housing residents participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program and/or reside in public housing to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on public assistance and rental subsidies. Take the South Shore Line to the Region celebration "219 Day" this Saturday, Feb. 16, in Hammond. Free shuttle bus service will be provided for the event between the SSL Hammond Station and the Hammond Civic Center. The shuttle will run from 5 pm to 10:45 pm on Saturday, with signage directing passengers to the shuttle. The Gary Metro Center elevator to the South Shore Line platform will be out of service until further notice. The La Porte County Drug Task Force announced the arrest of 4 individuals from separate investigations recently. The first investigation focused on the distribution of heroin and methamphetamine within the city of La Porte by a mother and son. The investigation revealed that 46 year old Michelle Burgess of La Porte and 20 year old Kolin Burgess of Kouts, Indiana were selling narcotics within the La Porte city limits. Lead investigator Sgt. Andy Hynek presented evidence to The La Porte County Prosecutors Office where probable cause was established in La Porte County Circuit Court to charge Michelle Burgess with Dealing

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announced the agency will split March benefit payments to eligible Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) clients. Recipients will see half of their March benefit amount added to their Hoosier Works cards on Feb. 22nd and the other half on their regularly scheduled March date, according to an alphabetical schedule. Troopers just happened to be in the right place at the right time this morning when they performed life saving measures on a Crown Point woman. Troopers Davonne Barlow, Rogelio Escutia, and Dennis Griffin were providing traffic direction, at the semi crash from earlier this Wednesday morning, on southbound I-65 at the 244 mile marker when a vehicle pulled over on the right shoulder. The male driver ran up to the troopers and advised them that his female passenger, a thirty year old 30 woman from Crown Point, was passed out and needed help. The troopers found the woman slumped

Yesterday, Governor Holcomb announced the volunteer citizen members of the Next Level Teacher Compensation Commission as a part of his effort to make teacher pay competitive with surrounding states.
