On the morning of February 12th, there was a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on Hamstrom Road.  The suspect fled the scene of the accident in a Dark Blue GMC Yukon. On February 15th at approximately 2:30 p.m. Detective Captain Joe Reynolds and Detective Corporal Dave Czilli located the suspect vehicle at a motor vehicle body shop in Gary, Indiana. A search warrant was obtained with the assistance of the Porter County Prosecutor's office and the vehicle was brought back to the Portage Police Department. On February 16th at approximately 12:30 p.m. the suspect came to the Portage Police

Porter County Highway Department stated  that the Frost Law is currently in effect as of Monday. It will last for the shortest duration possible but is based on road and weather conditions. The ordinance enacts a 5-ton weight limit on nearly every county road (all-weather roads maintained by the Porter County Highway Department are not subject to the Frost Law). Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at 40 sites in Indiana to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during College Goal Sunday. The event is set for 2 p.m. (local time), February 25, 2018. The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide. On Friday February 16th, 2018 at approximately 4:30 pm, The LaPorte County Drug Task Force, and The Michigan City SWAT Team executed a search warrant at 410 York Street.  The La Porte County Drug Task Force began an investigation, after citizen complaints, and after investigators conducted surveillance, and observed a high amount of foot traffic at this residence. Governor Eric Holcomb will present Vietnam veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Sammy L. Davis of Freedom, Indiana with the 2018 Sachem Award, the state's highest honor, at a ceremony Monday, March 12, 2018. On Friday night, the South Bend Police Department (SBPD) received a report of gunshots fired in the area of Gladstone and Silver Lane. Officers were dispatched to the area and found one male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to an area hospital and was initially listed in critical condition. The victim passed away and has been identified as 17 year old Daekwon L. Tobar and his family has been notified. Several witnesses have been interviewed at the County Metro Homicide Unit. The legacy of the late Allan “Al” Whitlow continues on through the announcement of the Al Whitlow Experience (AWE) mentoring program at Boys & Girls Club of Michigan City. Whitlow, who unexpectedly passed away on November 19, 2017, served as the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Michigan City for 13 years from 2001 to 2014. Ahead of National FFA Week, February 17-24, U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.), Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Doug Jones (D-Ala.) introduced legislation to update and modernize the charter for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) to reflect agriculture education in the 21st Century. The National FFA Organization's Federal Charter Amendments Act updates the FFA charter to allow for student officer vice presidents to reflect the regional diversity of the United States. Additionally, it provides governing flexibility for national officers in order to reduce operational delays caused by vacant seats. The amendments to the charter will also allow the
