LA PORTE, Ind. —More than 20 students in La Porte Community School Corporation's Health Careers program have earned their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licenses, a milestone that prepares them for immediate employment in health care and gives them hands-on experience in patient care while they are still in high school. To earn the credential, students completed classroom instruction, supervised clinical training, and a state competency exam. The CNA license allows them to work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other care settings, and it provides a strong foundation for students who plan to continue into nursing or other health professions.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a La Porte man who was found Monday evening. Just before 7 p.m., deputies responded to a residence in the 2900 west block of U.S. 20 regarding a report of a subject suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived a short time later, located the subject, and secured the scene. The deceased has been identified as 64-year-old James D. Williams of La Porte. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra (LCSO) has announced the appointment of Tim King as Interim Executive Director as the organization prepares to launch a search for its next Executive Director. King previously served as Executive Director of the LCSO until his retirement in 2023 and brings more than 40 years of leadership and service to the organization. In Starke County, an INDOT contractor will close the ramp from U.S. 35 to U.S. 30 eastbound on or after Wednesday, June 10 through mid-July. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow U.S. 35, State Road 8 and State Road 39. This ramp closure is to facilitate work on the U.S. 30 resurfacing project between U.S. 35 and Union Rd, with alternating lane closures through the end of November. On March 12, 2026, Gov. Mike Braun declared a disaster in Jasper, Newton and Starke counties following the severe storms that occurred on March 10, 2026. In response, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) has opened applications for the State Disaster Relief Fund (Individual Assistance). Only residents of Jasper, Newton and Starke counties are eligible to apply for State Disaster Relief Fund assistance related to this disaster declaration. The State Disaster Relief Fund is intended to help with immediate needs. Funds are available for eligible applicants up to $25,000.
