Monday night, Trooper Paul Arnold responded to a single vehicle rollover on I-94 west bound approximately 1/2 mile west of the Michigan/Indiana state line. A Freightliner pulling a box trailer, out of London, Ontario, and loaded with 44,000 pounds of Nutella cocoa spread, was west bound on I-94 when the driver stated a car in front of him “slammed on his brakes”. According to the Portage Police, during the last ten days, there have been three motor vehicle accidents involving Portage Township School buses, none of which were the fault of the bus drivers.The first occurred on September 6th on Crisman Road. The bus was in the southbound lane and stopped for a passing train. The motorist immediately behind the bus was also stopped, but had fallen asleep and let his foot slip off the brake causing his vehicle to strike the bus from behind. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office recently participated in and completed three traffic safety projects. The grant funded projects allowed for additional deputies to work overtime hours to increase traffic safety and public awareness. The three projects, Operation Pullover (OPO) Blitz #99, SAVE and DUI Task Force, produced significant results.OPO Blitz #99 patrols occurred between August 9th and September 2nd. A total of 100 hours was worked by nine deputies. Two-hundred vehicles were stopped that resulted in 57 citations and 205 warnings being issued. Citations were issued for exceeding the posted speed limit, driving while suspended, no seatbelt and open

The initiative, totaling over $2.8 million, will be spread over three-years to implement evidence-based curriculum to help develop, identify, implement and sustain substance use prevention programs. Motorists traveling along US 20 in northeast La Porte County should take notice of a reduction in the speed limit. On Friday afternoon, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) officially reduced the speed limit of US 20 from 55 MPH to 45 MPH in the area of Rolling Prairie.The new 45 MPH zone is located between CR 400 East and CR 450 East, for eastbound and westbound US 20 traffic. Motorists should adjust their driving behaviors accordingly and adhere to the new 45 MPH signage.

In Michigan City, Bulbs, Buzzers, and Silk Wires: Electrifying the Barker Mansion is taking place Wednesday, September 18th, 7-8:30 pm. This tour explores the history of electricity through the Barker Mansion. Guests will see the inner working of original electrical outlets in the floors and walls as well the 1905 switchboard, hidden call buttons in the walls, Tiffany lamps, nickel-plated telephones, and many more details normally hidden to the public. The tour will use the original work orders and contracts used by the Barkers' electricians in 1905. Cost is $5 for general admission.
