The Franciscan Health EMS Academy will give students the opportunity to earn their emergency medical technician (EMT) certification at two locations this year, in Crown Point and Valparaiso.In Crown Point, classes will be from 6 to 10PM Monday and Thursday, July 8 through Dec. 12. The classes will be at Franciscan Health Crown Point, 1201 S. Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced Danny Lopez will leave his post as chairman of the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet. Commissioner of Higher Education Teresa Lubbers will serve as the interim chair and P.J. Legislation authored by State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) providing offenders the option of paying court fees with community service was recently signed into law by the governor.Currently, a convicted person who does not pay their court fees by a specified date defaults and can be sent to jail. Pressel said making these offenders serve time does not reimburse the court, but instead leaves taxpayers to foot the bill.Under the new law, a court could reduce some or all of the costs owed by a person convicted of a felony or misdemeanor if they perform community service. The South Shore Line announced that construction is set to begin that will add a second entrance/exit to the East Chicago Station platform. The project is expected to continue through December 2019, and will help accommodate the large influx of passengers at East Chicago Station. The improvements include converting the low-level platform to the east of the station into a covered walkway to access a new head house, stairwell and tunnel leading to the eastern parking lot. The Indiana State Police Lowell Post held their annual memorial service this past Friday to honor those members of the department who gave their lives in the line of duty. Troopers were brought to attention and prepared for roll call by Lowell Sergeant Dan Leslie. On Friday May 2nd, at approximately 10:15 AM, the Michigan City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of Pleasant Ave. Upon arrival, firefighters found a two story 2 unit structure with heavy smoke and flames showing from the second story. The initial arriving fire companies found significant smoke conditions and a fire in the bedroom and living area. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. The fire appears to have started in the bedroom. The cause of the fire was a child playing with a lighter and caught the mattress

Over the past few weeks, Indiana has received significant rainfall amounts in some areas, flooding roadways. Many law enforcement agencies have responded to multiple calls for water rescues involving vehicles driving into floodwaters over the last few weeks. With anticipated precipitation still headed our way, drivers must remember to not risk their lives and instead turn around and seek alternative travel routes. Hoosiers are also urged to abide by the posted road-closed signs and barricades. In many instances, drivers have put themselves and their passengers

State Road 55 is closed in Newton County while crews replace culverts and resurface the roadway. The road will be closed between State Road 10 and State Road 14 until mid-July. State road detours must use state-maintained roads only. Southbound drivers on SR 55 will detour east on SR 10, south on I-65 and west on SR 14 back to SR 55. Northbound drivers on SR 55 will detour east on SR 14, north on I-65 and west on SR 10 back to SR 55.

Boyd and the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office will be co-hosting the 18th annual Peace Officer’s Memorial Service on Friday, May 10 in the Performing Arts Center of the former Elston High School. The program will begin at noon and last about one hour. Lunch will be served immediately following the ceremony. During the ceremony, the thirteen officers who have been killed in the line of duty in La Porte County will be honored.
