Porter County Sheriff’s Office announces 2nd annual Citizens Police Academy

The Porter County Sheriff's Office announced they will be hosting their 2nd annual Citizens Police Academy in 2025. Those that want to apply can do so at portercountysheriff.com. Arrest made after officers find dozens of neglected animals in Dyer

A man in unincorporated Dyer faces criminal charges after law enforcement discovered he had more than two dozen pets in need of care, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. Wednesday morning, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in serving a search warrant for suspected illegal hunting at home in the 8500 block of Sheffield. While on the property, officers observed numerous animals in distress, Martinez Jr. reported. The animals were confiscated and are being cared for at the Lake County Animal Control, the Hobart Humane Society and Humane Indiana located in Munster.

MCHS Cadets compete In national STEM game

Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) cadets competed in CyberPatriot on November 15th.  CyberPatriot is the national cyber security game that requires students to use skills used in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.  Participants act as cyber security managers for an organization's information management system, defending against and counter attacking a cyberattack.  Cadets Staff Sergeant Jhonatan Ruiz and Sergeant Jordan Staples attended a STEM camp this past summer just outside of Washington, DC.  The camp, to include transportation, cost the cadets nothing.  All costs were covered by the Marine Corps.

Berrien County deputies recover over 120 pounds of cocaine from truck on I-94

Berrien County deputies seized over 120 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on I-94 Monday, the Berrien County Sheriff's Office is reporting. On Nov. 18 deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office received information of narcotics traveling through Berrien County on I-94. The Berrien County deputies located the suspected vehicle, a Freightliner tractor trailer, and initiated a traffic stop on I-94 for a traffic violation near mile marker 34 eastbound. During a search of the vehicle and trailer 50 Kilograms of cocaine was located weighing approximately 123 pounds. The approximate street value of the substance is 1.5 million dollars.

Town of Chesterton hosting Holiday window display contest

City of La Porte planting trees as part of 2024 sidewalk replacement program

The City of La Porte announced on its Facebook page that as part of the Community Development Block Grant Program's 2024 sidewalk replacement program, the city arborist will be tagging locations where new trees will be planted over the next several days. Indiana State Police Lowell Post reveal week-long blitz statistics

Last week, Troopers at the Lowell Post participated in a week-long blitz with each day having a different crash causation factor as the primary focus. Braun bill recognizing Medal of Honor recipients sent to President’s desk to be signed into law

Sen. Mike Braun, Sen. Jon Tester, and Sen. Sherrod Brown celebrated the House passage of their bipartisan Mark Our Place Act, which is now headed to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The bill amends current law to allow the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide a headstone, marker, or medallion for Medal of Honor recipients, regardless of their date of death. LPCSC Board approves recommendation to repurpose Lincoln Elementary School into Early Childhood Center

The La Porte Community School Corporation (LPCSC) Board of School Trustees voted Monday night to approve Superintendent Dr. Sandra Wood's recommendation to repurpose Lincoln Elementary School into an Early Childhood Center. The decision came during a special board meeting at the Educational Services Center. Under the approved plan, Lincoln Elementary will be transformed into an LPCSC Early Childhood Center, which will house the district's consolidated preschool program. Michigan City man arrested after shooting, police say

A Michigan City man has been arrested for being a “serious violent felon in possession of a firearm” after an argument led to him allegedly firing a gun Saturday night, according to the Michigan City Police Department. On Saturday Nov. 16, just before 7:30 p.m., the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to gunshots being fired in the area of West 7th Street and Grant Avenue. Mrvan Announces SS4A Grants for Michigan City, Whiting, and NIRPC

Yesterday, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced federal grant awards for the City of Michigan City, the City of Whiting, and the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) under the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program. Specifically, Michigan City will receive $80,000, and Whiting will receive $200,000 to develop comprehensive safety action plans that aim to eliminate roadway fatalities, and NIRPC will receive $400,000 to develop a Regional Safety Action Plan that aims to eliminate roadway fatalities in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties.  According to the DOT, the SS4A Grant program aims to improve

MCHS host drill meet, earns awards

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) hosted a military drill competition on November 16th at the school’s gym. Schools from Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Romeoville, IL and Portage competed. Judges came from the University of Illinois-Chicago ROTC. MCHS earned third place trophies in Color Guard (Armed Division) and Armed Regulation. NIPSCO inspectors performing safety inspections in Ogden Dunes

The Ogden Dunes Police Department says they have been notified by NISPCO that there will be contractors in town performing safety inspections on the meters. The department says if you see anyone in your yard, please don't be alarmed and allow them to do their inspections.
