Purdue Northwest School of Engineering announces collaboration with university in Argentina

The Purdue University Northwest (PNW) School of Engineering has started a collaborative program with Argentina’s Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN), a technical university with approximately 70,000 engineering students across the country, and its two main campuses in Buenos Aires. As part of this program, Federico Gallo has been working and teaching classes in the department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at PNW. His tenure as a visiting professor is an element of a broader initiative that resulted from interactions between Dietmar Rempfer, director of PNW’s School of Engineering, and Uriel Cukierman, director of the Center for Educational Research and Innovation at

October Indiana Employment Report

Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.2 percent for October and remains lower than the national rate of 3.6 percent. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 567 over the previous month. This was a result of a decrease of 1,397 unemployed residents and an increase of 1,964 employed residents. Health Department Launches Teen Anti-vaping Media Campaign

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) launched a public awareness campaign yesterday to educate youths about the dangers of e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” The “Behind the Haze” campaign is part of a $2 million effort announced by Governor Eric J. Fourteen Purdue University Northwest (PNW) Honors College students participated as presenters at the 54th National Collegiate Honors Council Annual Conference (NCHC) held Nov. 6-10 in New Orleans. Update on Robbery at Horizon Bank

Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 1 were dispatched to Lighthouse Liquors (501 Washington Street) on November 10th, 2019 at 12:57 PM for a robbery in progress.  Officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect.  Detective Sergeant Kevin Urbanczyk from the Investigative Division was assigned this investigation and worked closely in conjunction with detectives from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department after 44-year-old Michigan City resident Terry Allen West Jr. was arrested and charged with Robbery (Level 5 Felony) for his involvement with a robbery at Horizon Bank in Wanatah, Indiana on November 12th, 2019.  Detective Sergeant Urbanczyk presented

Hoosiers struggling with heating bills may have a solution

Winter weather is already here and Hoosiers who struggle to pay their heating bills need to take action now to ensure they aren't left in the cold this winter. The state's disconnect moratorium for electric and natural gas utilities starts starts December 1st. However, it is only applicable for those who are already enrolled in the Energy Assistance Program, or if an E-A-P intake office has confirmed their eligibility and notified the utility in writing. VETERAN HOMELESSNESS INCREASES IN INDIANA BY 6 PERCENT

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office to increase traffic enforcement during the holidays

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting overtime patrols during the holidays, thanks to a $49,250 traffic safety improvement grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Gov. Holcomb Announces Judicial Appointment for Porter Court Circuit Court Vacancy

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced Mary DeBoer as his appointment to the Porter County Circuit Court. DeBoer will succeed Judge Mary Harper, who will retire on Dec. 31. Judge Harper holds the distinction of being the longest serving woman in the Indiana judiciary. Following her graduation from law school, DeBoer served as a deputy prosecutor in Starke and Porter counties. DeBoer has also been in private practice. Since 2011, she has served as a magistrate for the Porter County Superior Courts in Valparaiso.  DeBoer earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and her law degree from Valparaiso University School

Bank Robbery In Wanatah, Two Subjects In Custody

Tuesday at 10:52 AM, the Horizon Bank located at 113 West First Street, in Wanatah, was robbed. Several minutes later, the LaPorte County E-911 Center received information that deputies from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing a vehicle matching a description that was provided by a witness.The vehicle pursuit continued north along State Road 49 before turning west on US Highway 12.
