New La Porte Hospital Tops Out, Ceremony Held

La Porte Hospital reached another milestone yesterday, with a Topping Out celebration. Construction tradition celebrates the last steel beam being hoisted into place during a Topping Out ceremony. In just over three months, more than 3 million pounds of steel have been assembled to create the structure of the new La Porte Hospital.  Hospital leadership, volunteers, board members, contractors, and construction workers attended the event as the last beam was placed at the top of the structure. The beam, which was placed inside the lobby of the existing hospital earlier this week, was signed by many employees, community members and others.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Investigates US 20 Crash

On Wednesday, September 11, at approximately 1:50 P.M. (CST), deputies were dispatched to the area of US 20 and Wiley Road reference a personal injury crash. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a passenger vehicle wedged underneath a trailer that was being pulled by a semi-tractor. The crash investigation determined both vehicles were traveling west on US 20 in the construction zone of the “Dogbone” interchange project.  The semi-tractor, a Freightliner, was slowing for congested traffic in the westbound single lane of travel. Evidence and further obtained statements revealed the passenger vehicle, a 2006 Pontiac, driven by 30 year old Zachery Sims

Baby Box Used In Hammond

On Friday, a healthy newborn baby girl was safely surrendered, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Hammond, via a Safe Haven Baby Box that had been active for less than 30 days.  This is the third newborn placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box in less than two years in Indiana.This is also the seventh surrendered infant in Indiana for 2019. Franciscan Hospital Emergency Department and security were notified by the alarm as soon as the newborn’s mother opened the outside door to place her baby in the box. On September 9th, 2019, at approximately 10:46 pm, the Michigan City Police Department received a call of shots fired in the area of the 3400 building of Salem Court. Officers arrived to find a victim on the sidewalk being administered CPR by several subjects. Upon further investigation it was determined that the subject had just been shot and was immediately transported to Franciscan Alliance Hospital. Shortly afterwards the victim, identified as 29-year-old Maurice J.
