Several of U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly’s provisions to combat the opioid abuse epidemic were signed into law yesterday by the President as part of the bipartisan Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act. Donnelly spoke on the Senate Floor earlier this month about his bipartisan efforts to address this public health crisis. Indiana State Police Lowell Post Partners with the DEA for the 16th Drug Take Back Day

This Saturday, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring the 16th nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative.  The “Take Back” initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through proper disposal of prescription drugs. Collection sites will be set up nationwide for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be properly disposed of without threat to the environment.  This program is for liquid and pill medications. Victim Reportedly Stabbed In Possible Home Invasion In Center Township, Porter County

Porter County Sheriff’s Detectives are currently investigating a possible home invasion in the Center Township, Waterford Subdivision on Kinsale Avenue in rural Valparaiso. The incident took place on Monday night around 6:30pm. The victim, an 18 year old male from Valparaiso, was reportedly stabbed while at the residence by an unknown subject. Nothing is reported to be missing from the residence. The victim’s name is not being released at this time pending further investigation as he is still in the hospital in serious condition. Fatal Motorcycle Crash on U.S. HWY 30 In Valparaiso

Valparaiso Police responded to the report of a motorcycle crash in the 800 block of U.S. HWY 30 at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Monday, in which the motorcycle had struck a deer. Upon arrival, officer located a male subject in the roadway unresponsive.  Valparaiso Fire/EMS arrived on scene and determined the motorcyclist was deceased. Police were advised by witnesses the motorcycle was eastbound on U.S. HWY 30, just east of Sager Rd., when the motorcyclist struck a deer. Police continue to investigate the crash.

Department of Revenue Nation Leading Fraud Team Stops over $9.7 Million in 2018

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) has made a tremendous investment in protecting Hoosier’s identities and preventing refund fraud, stopping over $9.7 million in fraud in 2018. Since the program’s inception in 2014, DOR’s identity and refund fraud protection program has stopped over $119 million in refund theft. Removal of Bridge Beams to Close Capital Avenue Up to 2 Weeks in St. Joseph County

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that State Road 331 (Capital Avenue) in St. Joseph County will close Monday, Oct. 29, for up to two weeks between State Road 933 (Lincolnway East) and Jefferson Street. Crews will be removing existing beams from the bridge over the St. Joseph River as part of a bridge reconstruction project. Purdue University Northwest earns cooperative agreement for research from NSWC Crane

Purdue University Northwest (PNW), through its Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS), was recently awarded a cooperative agreement from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) to research the ability to predict the lifespan of electronic components. Two Valparaiso Juveniles Arrested for Burglary and Arson

This past Saturday afternoon, Valparaiso Police responded to Valplayso, 1448 Glendale Blvd., to assist the Valparaiso Fire Department for the report of a small fire to the shelter. Officer Michelle Kodicek arrived on scene and began to investigate. She located a damaged rear door to the shelter, which had been forced open, and a burning plastic beverage receptacle inside. Valparaiso Fire arrived on scene and extinguished the fire with an estimated $950 damage to equipment inside the building. There was no apparent structural damage to the shelter. Veterans Ride the South Shore For Free

All veterans are invited to ride the South Shore Line for free through the weekend of November 9-11, 2018, and on Veterans Day (November 11), observed November 12. MCHS MCJROTC COMPETES, EARNS AWARD AT HOBART RAIDER COMPETITION

The cadets of the Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) earned a first-place finish in the orienteering event at the Hobart Army JROTC Raider competition on Saturday, October 20th. Pedestrian Identified in Early Monday State Road 49 Crash

Valparaiso Police responded to the area, of State Road 49 and LaPorte Ave. at around 1:22 a.m. for a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. A male subject was lying in the roadway on State Road 49 when struck by a tractor trailer.  The tractor trailer was traveling northbound on State Road 49. The male was transported to Porter Regional Hospital and later airlifted to a South Bend Hospital for further treatment. At approx. 11:30 am Friday morning, Courthouse security Deputies Jon Keene and Aaron King were physically attacked by in individual who was later identified as 37 year old Joshua Duncan, from Michigan City. At approx. 11:30 am, Joshua Duncan walked into the courthouse and as he entered the security checkpoint, he without provocation or warning “sucker” punched Deputy Keene in the nose. He then turned toward Deputy King and began physically assaulting Deputy King. September Indiana Employment Report

Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.5 percent for September and remains lower than the national rate of 3.7 percent. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 4,564 over the previous month. This was a result of a 337 decrease in unemployed residents and an increase of 4,901 employed residents. “2018” LEAF PICK UP SCHEDULE

Beginning on Monday October 22, 2018, City of Michigan City Departments will be picking up leaves in all areas of the city. Leaf pick-up will occur daily, Monday through Saturday, until all leaves are picked up. All residents are encouraged to rake, blow, and/or place their leaves near the street curb along the front of their property.
