Michigan City Trick or Treat hours for October 31st, 2018 will be from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Please keep an exterior light on if your residence will be passing out candy to children. Extra officers will be patrolling the city before, during, and after the Trick or Treat hours. Blow Away Breast Cancer rally at La Porte Hospital October 8th

The first ever Blow Away Breast Cancer rally at La Porte Hospital will commemorate breast cancer awareness month in the community and serve to celebrate and honor those who have been affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. The event will take place at 1 p.m., Oct. 8 at La Porte Hospital, 1007 Lincolnway, La Porte, on the front lawn near the flagpole. In case of inclement weather, meet in the hospital’s main lobby. Queen of All Saints Health Fair In Michigan City

Community members are invited to a free fall health fair on Saturday, October 20. The event takes place in the Legacy Center at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Michigan City. Michigan City High School Student Earns Highest Possible ACT Score

Julia Miller, daughter of Michael and Nancy Miller and a senior at Michigan City High School, earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. On average, only around one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2017, only 2,760 out of more than 2 million graduates who took the ACT earned a composite score of 36. AG Curtis Hill leads 12-state brief seeking dismissal of latest federal lawsuit targeting fossil-fuel corporations

Attorney General Curtis Hill announced that he is leading a 12-state coalition seeking the dismissal of a federal lawsuit filed by King County, Washington, against five fossil-fuel companies. The lawsuit claims the companies have violated “common law” by contributing to global warming – which, the plaintiffs claim, constitutes a “public nuisance” and “trespass.” In his amicus (friend-of-the-court) brief, Attorney General Hill states that the Clean Air Act – and the Environmental Protection Agency’s corresponding enforcement authority – supersedes federal common law nuisance claims pertaining to emissions. LANE/RAMP CLOSURES – I-65 in Lake County

A concrete restoration project will start Wednesday in the southbound lanes of I-65 in Lake County, between 61st Avenue and U.S. 30. During the project, southbound traffic on I-65 will be split, with one lane to the right and two lanes to the left during the day. At night, traffic will only pass in the one lane to the right as crews work in the left lanes. Fall turkey season

The fall wild turkey hunting season and the early archery season started Oct. 1 and firearms season runs from Oct. 17-28. The late archery season runs from Dec. 8, 2018 to Jan. 6, 2019. The bag and possession limit for the fall seasons is one bird of either sex. Fall archery season is statewide. Semi Loses Coil on 80/94

A semi lost a coil yesterday evening causing the I-80/94 eastbound to Ripley Street south bound ramp to be closed for approximately two hours. On Wednesday, just after 5:30 pm, a 2000 Volvo semi pulling a covered flatbed, was eastbound on I-80/94 in the right lane when he abruptly had to brake and swerve to avoid an unknown car that cut him off. The coil that was loaded on his trailer rolled off and went across the exit ramp to Ripley Street south bound ramp.  This caused damage to the roadway and the south side guard rail. The coil came

STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AWARDED GRANT TO HELP PREVENT SUDDEN UNEXPECTED INFANT AND CHILD DEATHS

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has been awarded a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to participate in the Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Registry. The five-year grant will enhance ISDH’s coordination with the CDC’s SUID/SDY Case Registry. It also will support efforts to improve investigation techniques, promote safe sleep education and obtain more accurate and complete data for the registry through work with state and local child fatality review teams, coroners, law enforcement and the Indiana Department of Child Services. INDOT Offers Scholarships, Jobs to Engineers in Training

The Indiana Department of Transportation is offering civil engineering students scholarships and paid employment during summer breaks and upon graduation. Students must be accepted or enrolled full time in one of Indiana’s certified civil engineering schools and apply using the form at www.INDOTScholarship.IN.gov. Applications for the 2019-2020 academic school year must be submitted by December 31, 2018. INDOT’s scholarship program uses federal funds to offer $3,125 per semester or $2,083 per trimester for up to five years of post-secondary civil engineering education.
