University of Southern Indiana First Softball Program In Indiana To Win An NCAA Title

The University of Southern Indiana softball team has won the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The victory is a historic one for the USI team, which is the first women's program at USI and the first softball program in Indiana to win an NCAA title. The team defeated Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire in the first two games of the best-of-three series to take the championship.

Walorski Introduces Bill to Increase Military Death Benefits

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) recently introduced legislation to double the survivor benefits paid immediately after the death of a servicemember while on active duty. The bill would decrease by the same amount payments made to the families of Members of Congress who die in office. H.R. 5982 would increase the death gratuity paid to the families of servicemembers who die on active duty from $100,000 to $200,000. The bill would also mandate that 60 percent of the death gratuity be reserved for the surviving spouse, allowing servicemembers to designate recipients for the remaining 40 percent. Chesterton Graduation Parking

In an effort to make the graduation ceremony at Chesterton High School a safe and enjoyable experience for the students and guests, the Duneland School Corporation, in conjunction with the Chesterton Police and Street Department, are asking for the public's cooperation with regard to parking and traffic prior to and following the ceremony. Michigan City Human Rights Dept. Opens Up Construction Jobs

The Michigan City Human Rights Department is updating its Local Hiring Registry. They are seeking qualified residents with documented experience in the building and construction trades that have an interest in working on municipally funded projects. Mobile Health Unit Cancer Screenings

The Mobile Health Unit of La Porte Hospital will be out in the community throughout June to provide blood pressure screenings and to educate on skin cancer and sun/heat safety. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone practice monthly head-to-toe self-examination of their skin, so that they can find any new or changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. SR 933 Closures In South Bend

INDOT announced lane closures for the State Road 933 bridge over the St. Joseph River in South Bend, located near Leeper Park. The bridge will be down to one lane in each direction beginning Tuesday, May 29th through the end of June. Crews will be rehabilitating the bridge deck. Traffic is advised to avoid the area, if possible, to avoid delays and back-ups.

DOR’s New Payment Options For Hoosiers

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) has instituted new payment plan options to help ease the burden to Hoosier taxpayers. The new payment plan options became effective in early May and allow individuals to establish plans for a longer period of time without the previous requirement of a down payment equal to 20 percent of the outstanding liability. To establish a payment plan, the amount of tax due must be $100 or greater. The La Porte County Career and Technical Education program hosted a “CTE Signing Day” on Tuesday, May 22 at the A. K. Smith Center in Michigan City. Warrior Remembrance Ride Beginning in Michigan City

The American Legion Riders Chapter 451 in Michigan City, in conjunction with other Chapters in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan Legion Rider Chapter will host the first annual Warrior Remembrance Ride on Sunday before Memorial Day. The ride will start from Post 451 in Michigan City with making stops at American Legion Posts in Bristol, Indiana, Sturgis, Michigan and Battle Creek, Michigan. Then will head to Fort Custer National Cemetery to pay our respects to those who have served in the Armed Forces by participating in the annual Memorial Day ceremony. Michigan City Department Holiday Hours

The Michigan City Refuse Department will be closed Monday, May 28th to observe the Memorial Day Holiday. Trash and Compost pickup will resume on Tuesday, May 29th and the normal pickup day will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. All Central Service Departments will be closed on Monday May 28th including: Forester Department, Street Department, Vector Control and Central Maintenance. Normal work schedules will resume on Tuesday, May 29th. In observance of Memorial Day, the Michigan City Transit Department will be closed on Monday May 28th with normal schedules resuming on Tuesday, May 29th.

Massive Gary Runway Rehab Project Completed and Now Open

Last weekend the Gary/Chicago International airport reopened ahead of schedule the main runway (at Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) following a massive four week rehabilitation and rebuild of more than 4,000 feet of the 8,859 foot runway. The $7.9 million runway rehabilitation project was critical to extending the lifespan of the runway and increasing weight limits to allow the airport to service bigger and heavier aircraft.  Approximately 22,000 man hours of labor were logged to complete the project early and on budget.

Summer Puts the Heat on Impaired Driving in La Porte County

Every year, summer travelers hit Indiana’s roads in droves to enjoy barbecues, picnics, lakes and pool parties. This also increases impaired driving on the way home from summer festivities. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Looking For Wanted Person

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a wanted person. 25 year old Maurice J. Williams is currently wanted on an active criminal arrest warrant by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office for Level 3 Felony Armed Robbery. Williams has been positively identified as the perpetrator of an armed robbery that occurred on the night of April 28th, 2018, at Next Door Foods located at 10210 North US Highway 12 in Michigan City.
