Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate passed the Payment Integrity Information Act of 2019, a bipartisan bill introduced by U.S. Senators Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The legislation aims to cut down on government waste and improper payments made by the federal government – including overpayments, underpayments, payments made to ineligible recipients or payments that were not properly documented.

The South Shore Line will be busing two separate routes for weekday (Monday-Friday) passengers while upgrades of track and segments of overhead wire take place between Dune Park and South Bend. This temporary busing is scheduled for Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26. On Wednesday, July 24, through Friday, July 26, additional busing of mid-day trains from Dune Park to Carroll Ave. will take place. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Sgt. Jamie Erow along with South Haven Fire Department’s Asst. Chief Tina Nabhan and Captain Eric Wood presented items from their respective departments to a local South Haven toddler for her bravery during a medical call for her mother. In February of this year, 2 year old Teegan, was home with her mom and 2 week old infant sister when her mother began having a medical issue. The Duneland School Corporation has named new administrators at Jackson Elementary School and Chesterton Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year. Samuel J. Marshall has been named the new principal at Jackson Elementary School. Mr. Marshall will be replacing Dr. Linda Rugg who resigned her position as principal in June after 19 years. Michael Hamacher has been named the new principal at Chesterton Middle School. Mr. Hamacher will be replacing Mike Megyesi who resigned his position as principal after eight years.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued an Excessive Heat Warning which is in effect from 2 PM EDT /1 PM CDT/ Thursday to 8 PM EDT /7 PM CDT/ Saturday. According to INDOT, there's been a slight change to the paving schedule for SR 933 in South Bend. The first two phases (Angela Boulevard to Douglas Road; Douglas Road to just south of Cleveland Road) are unchanged.Crews will then proceed from just north of Cleveland to the Michigan state line in the northbound right lane, before turning around and paving the southbound driving lane. Then, the left lanes will be done in the same rotation before crews pave the center turn lane.All paving on the entire corridor from Angela Boulevard to the state line is anticipated to be complete in

There will be overnight ramp closures tonight and Thursday at the I-65 and SR 10 interchange while crews do underdrain work.Today, the ramps connecting southbound I-65 to SR 10 will close. Thursday, the ramps connecting northbound I-65 to SR 10 will close. Work is expected to wrap up Friday morning.

Seven local organizations have announced a community-wide school supply drive in Michigan City, which runs through August 5. Supplies collected during the drive will be distributed to area students who are in need of materials to start the school year. Many area businesses, including major retailers, have set up collection bins to accept donations from their employees and the general public.Businesses, churches, and other organizations are invited to join in the collection drive. Yesterday, U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) introduced the Government Bailout Prevention Act to ensure that federal dollars cannot be used to help insolvent state, territory, or local governments pay off their obligations. Under this bill, no arm of the federal government, including the Federal Reserve System and the U.S. Treasury Department, can pay or guarantee state and local obligations if that state or local government entity has filed bankruptcy, has defaulted on its debts, or is at risk of bankruptcy or default.
