Women’s Fund of Porter County Awards Grants to Local Organizations

VALPARAISO, IND. — The Women’s Fund of Porter County, held at the Porter County Community Foundation (PCCF), is awarding $57,500 in grants to local organizations that meet the needs of women and children. The Caring Place and Porter County Aging and Community Services will receive $25,000 each to support high-impact programs. One injured, suspect arrested in Michigan City Shooting

One person was injured and a suspect arrested in connection to a shooting Sunday in Michigan City. On Sunday just before 6:30 p.m., the dispatch center received a 911 call regarding a person who was shot at the BP gas station, located at 1302 East Michigan Boulevard.  The victim was then transported to the Michigan City Police Department for medical treatment by a witness at the scene.  Officers provided medical treatment to a 40-year-old Michigan City resident who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the left leg.  LaPorte County EMS arrived at the Michigan City Police Department and transported

Carlson Corners now closed around the clock in the Town of Porter

In the Town of Porter, Carlson Corners is now closed around the clock through approximately Oct. 3 for stormwater project, according to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page. After a on-site inspection Thursday, the contractor for a stormwater project on Carlson Corners has determined that the road will need to be closed to through-traffic 24/7, in order to stage materials adequately and shorten the project’s timeline. DNR: Lake and River Enhancement grants to benefit 18 lake and stream projects

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced that organizations in 12 Indiana counties will receive $1,324,000 in grants to fund 18 lake, river, and watershed land treatment projects through DNR’s Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program. Funded projects are in LaGrange, Montgomery, Kosciusko, Owen, Marion, Elkhart, Starke, Dekalb, Randolph, Fountain, Jennings, and Gibson counties. The grants are funded through the LARE fee paid annually by boat owners when they register their craft with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This user-funded program benefits boaters all over the state. Roadwork today in Michigan City

The City of Michigan City says side street approaches to Coolspring Avenue are being paved between Cleveland Avenue and Virginia Court. Coolspring remains open to traffic with temporary closures at the side streets. Also, Sanders Street is being paved from Lupine Street to Elmwood Drive. The city says to please be mindful of construction crews working in these areas. All roadway construction is weather permitting and subject to change.

OECOSL Announces Updated Child Care Voucher Rates to Comply with Federal Regulations and Protect Families

On Thursday, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning (OECOSL) announced revised Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) voucher reimbursement rates. These adjustments address a $225 million funding gap through 2026 created by the prior administration’s unsustainable use of temporary COVID relief funds and ensure continued compliance with federal requirements. To establish equitable rates, OECOSL received surveys from 25 percent of licensed childcare providers and analyzed their cost data, arriving at reimbursement levels that reflect current operating realities. “We made this decision to protect the children and families that depend on CCDF vouchers.

Lowell Troopers make over 500 traffic stops Labor Day Weekend

Troopers assigned to the Lowell Post were on high alert this past Labor Day weekend for aggressive and impaired drivers. As a result, several drivers were cited for reckless driving due to extremely high speeds.
