The Michigan City Police released the following update with a cause of death revealed to a recent death investigation: On March 27th at approximately 9:48 AM, the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding an unconscious person found outside of Temple Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2725 Wabash Street. Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 1 responded to the scene and located 57-year-old Michigan City resident Erik Johnson lying on the ground unconscious. Responding officers provided Johnson with life saving measures until LaPorte County EMS arrived and transported him to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City where he

The City of La Porte announced the Dumpster Program has returned for its fifth season. Located at the Street Department (1206 2nd Street), the dumpster will be available to city residents Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Due to increased demand, the dumpster will also be available on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (NOTE: Dumpster will be closed on the Fridays before the 1st and 3rd Saturdays to allow for more room the following day). The La Porte Park and Recreation Department announced they have been awarded a $6,500 Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) Invasive Aquatic Vegetation Management Grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. "The grant funds 80 percent of the cost for surveying and treating Clear Lake for invasive plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil and purple loosestrife," the Park and Rec Department said on its Facebook page. The Porter County Sheriff’s Department announced last week that K9s Deebo and Quinn will receive bullet and stab protective vests thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The Michigan City Department of Water Works will begin the semi-annual fire hydrant flushing on Wednesday, April 1. This is done to insure the hydrants are in proper working order for the spring and summer months, and also to find any hydrants that may have been damaged over the winter. The program should take approximately eight weeks to complete. If anyone should experience any discoloration in their water, they should let the water run for a short time and the water will clear.  

State Road 49 will have traffic restrictions north of U.S. 20 to the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance beginning on or after Wednesday, April 1. The right lane of northbound State Road 49 will be closed at the U.S. 20 bridge north to U.S. 12. This closure is for overhead signage installation. Once installed, overhead signage will better direct motorists to turn left on U.S. 12 for the National Park or to continue straight for the State Park. Crews will also conduct patching and resurfacing operations north of U.S. 12 to the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance. Intermittent flagging operations
