Although fireworks displays are considered by most of us to be as patriotic as the American flag and apple pie, they can contaminate our lakes and waterways if not handled properly. Indiana American Water, the state’s largest investor-owned water utility, encourages everyone lighting off fireworks this weekend to keep them away from local water sources to help reduce the amount of contaminants entering Indiana’s waterways. Man Injured In New Buffalo Structure Fire

A man was injured after a structure fire in New Buffalo early Wednesday, according to police. Berrien County Dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire at a residence in the 15000 block of Locke Rd in Chikaming Township. The initial 911 call came from a neighbor, who was unaware if the residence remained occupied. Deputy Brittany Garza of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department’s New Buffalo Twp Patrol, and Sgt. Russ Tillery of the New Buffalo Police Department, were initial emergency responders on scene. Both Deputy Garza and Sgt. Tillery entered the smoke filled residence, subsequently locating the homeowner inside.

Masks now optional inside Duneland School Corporation buildings

Masks are now optional inside Duneland School Corporation buildings, Assistant Superintendent Robert McDermott announced. Pursuant to Gov. Holcomb’s executive order, authorizing school corporations to determine themselves, the COVD-19 mitigation measures and restrictions which they deem “necessary and prudent”, Duneland School Corporation has opted to move to Level 1 or Green. That decision was based on consultation with the Porter County Health Department and daily monitoring of school, community, county, and statewide cases, according to McDermott. Per federal guidelines, students and staff who travel in buses or other vehicles must continue to wear a face covering.

Zigler Elected to fill Pleasant Twp Trustee seat

On Wednesday a caucus of Republican Precinct Committeemen was held at the Pleasant Township Fire Department to fill the vacant Pleasant Township Trustee seat. The vacancy was a result of the recent passing of longtime Pleasant Township Trustee Susan Cable. Cable held the Pleasant Township Trustee’s seat for 26 years prior to her passing. Franciscan Health moves vaccine clinics out of hospitals

The COVID-19 vaccination clinics that have operated in Franciscan Health hospitals in Crown Point, Hammond and Michigan City since December 2020 are ending operations as vaccinations shift to sites outside of the hospitals. Porter County Sheriff’’s Office Warns Of Suspicious Phone Calls In The Area

The Porter County Sheriff’’s Office says they have again been receiving reports that citizens have been getting telephone calls in which people were fraudulently claiming to be law enforcement officials recently.  Sometimes callers can mask the caller ID information to make it appear as if the call is coming from a police department or other government entity. La Porte County Public Library is excited to announce that the LPCPL Exchange at 807 Indiana Avenue in La Porte is now open to the public. New Principal Named for Pine Elementary School

The Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday to approve Courtney Barber as the new principal of Pine Elementary School. Barber’s most recent role with Michigan City Area Schools has been as EL Education Fifth Grade Teacher Leader, and since August 2019 she has been a Principal Designee with Edgewood Elementary School where she also served as Elementary Principal Intern. NIPSCO Seeks Grant Applications for Public Safety Education and Responder Training

NIPSCO is accepting applications for a grant to support local nonprofit organizations who provide public safety education and training across northern Indiana. Grants are available in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000. Applications are being accepted now through August 13, 2021, with grant awards announced during the week of August 23. Grant opportunities will include, but are not limited to, community and youth public safety education programming and training for first responders, police and fire department fire and carbon monoxide safety programs, education and training in the prevention of damage to underground natural gas lines, and child-related safety education.
