Rural Springfield Township Woman Arrested Following Stabbing

On Monday, just before 2:30 AM, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to Gallops Marathon at West US 20 and SR 39, in reference to a male subject who was bleeding.  Upon the arrival of deputies, they were quickly able to determine the subject had been stabbed resulting in upper body injuries. The victim was later transported to an area hospital.Members of the Criminal Investigations Division were immediately contacted and activated. First Woman Ever Promoted to Indiana Director of DNR Fish & Wildlife

Amanda Wuestefeld, who has worked full-time in the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife for more than 25 years, was promoted to division director this week. Wuestefeld replaces Mark Reiter, who retired in July. She is the first woman to hold the position for Indiana DNR Fish & Wildlife (DFW). For the past five years, Wuestefeld has served as the assistant division director. Before that, she served as the Hoosier Outdoor Heritage coordinator for eight years. United Way AmeriCorps program seeks residents to serve in local nonprofits and schools

The United Way AmeriCorps program of Northwest Indiana is looking for residents to support community initiatives in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, and Marshall Counties.The program is in need of 24 team members to support area nonprofit and school programs. AmeriCorps members serve as high school and college career advisors, K-12 tutors in area schools and volunteer recruiters. The 2019-2020 AmeriCorps program season begins in September. State Health Department Kicks Off Ob Navigator With Road Shows

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) held the first of a series of community road shows to discuss Indiana’s new OB Navigator Program, which is aimed at reducing the state’s infant mortality rate. Porter County Animal Shelter Achieves Dramatic Reduction In Euthanizations

With 387 animal intakes and 348 outcomes during the first sixth months of 2019, the Porter County Animal Shelter announced that only two animals (0.6% of outcomes) were euthanized – one for aggression and one for medical reasons. Since 2016, during the same period, the Shelter has achieved gradual reductions, but the first six months of 2019 was the largest drop they have ever attained. The standard for achieving no kill status is that the shelter maintains a euthanization rate below 10%. Overall, the Shelter took in 387 animals between January 1 and June 30. Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will host a Flood Map Information Open House on Aug. 29 from 5 to 7pm for Lake Michigan shoreline communities of Porter County. The La Porte City Police Department will be conducting School Bus Safety patrols now through September 13th. Indiana National Guard Adjutant General Retiring

Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced that Indiana National Guard Adjutant General Courtney Carr will retire. Carr has served as Adjutant General since 2015 and his resignation is effective Friday. Brigadier General Timothy Winslow will serve as the interim Adjutant General. Winslow is a career Army National Guard aviator and was promoted to brigadier general in May.

Major La Porte Project at NewPorteLanding Set To Begin Construction

Construction on a $35 million mixed-use development in La Porte will be underway next month. Indianapolis-based Flaherty & Collins Properties says they will start work on a three-building campus in the middle of the city's NewPorte Landing redevelopment project called “The Strand”. The Strand will feature 200 new living units, 5,000 square feet of retail space, and amenities such as a resort-style pool, outdoor courtyard, a pet wash and bark park, fitness center, and bike storage and repair. The Strand is expected to be complete by the third quarter of 2021.
