A.K. Smith Career Center students go back to class in a new partnership

Students at A.K. Smith Career Center who are enrolled in the Education Professions program are getting back into the classroom, but this time in a whole new way. The South Shore Line announces that it will again offer a “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” promotion, applicable for March monthly tickets. All monthly tickets purchased for the month of March 2022 will remain valid throughout April 2022. Moving violation leads to chase in stolen U-Haul on Indiana Toll Road

A lengthy pursuit on the Indiana Toll Road of a stolen U-Haul landed an Illinois man in jail after he refused to stop for Indiana State Troopers. Indiana State Police Dispatch say on Monday they received a call from the Ohio State Highway Patrol informing them that their troopers had been in pursuit of a stolen U-Haul in the Toledo, OH area. Authorities in Ohio were able to provide identifying information on the vehicle and they also had reason to believe that it was in Indiana. Governor Holcomb signs executive orders granting medical clemency for three men

Governor Eric Holcomb Thursday announced that he signed executive orders granting medical clemency to three offenders who are bed ridden and diagnosed with terminal health conditions. The three men will be released to the supervision of the Parole Board and will serve the remainder of their lives at a skilled nursing home under the state’s care. In all three cases the offenders require 24-hour a day care as they are unable to care for themselves. Fatal crash on I-94 in Porter County involving police pursuit of burglary suspect

On Wednesday evening at approximately 8:06 p.m., the Michigan City Police Department responded to an address on Carlon Ct. for a burglary in progress.  As a result of this dispatch, a Michigan City police officer initiated a pursuit of the suspect who fled the scene in a white 2009 Chevrolet Impala.  The pursuit eventually went onto I-94 westbound from U.S. 421.  A Lowell trooper in the area observed the vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed after it entered Porter County.  The trooper activated his emergency lights and siren as the vehicle continued to flee.  When the vehicle

Man charged with attempted murder of Gary police officer

A Gary man was charged with attempted murder of a Gary police officer, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Wednesday police announced that 22-year-old Kameron T. Cooks, of Gary, is facing a charge of attempted murder in the shooting of veteran Gary police officer Sgt. William Fazekas on Feb. 7. Cooks also faces one count of aggravated battery, three counts of resisting law enforcement and one count of striking a law enforcement animal.

Michigan City Salvation Army hosts food drive to tackle hunger

The Salvation Army of Michigan City is offering a unique way to celebrate the “Big Game” by tackling hunger in Michigan City.  A drive-through food drive will be held this Saturday, February 12 from 9 a.m. to noon to help restock food pantry shelves. The Salvation Army is seeking donations to the food pantry to help restock the shelves after serving nearly 600 local families with Christmas assistance.  In addition, the food pantry serves approximately 500 families per month. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant awarded to Sanitary District of Michigan City

Wednesday, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced that the Sanitary District of Michigan City will receive a grant award from the Nonpoint Source Runoff and Nutrient Reduction Program under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The grant award, which is over $292,000, will be used to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff in Michigan City communities. Specifically, the funding will support the Adams Park Stormwater Wetland Restoration project, which will develop a 2.5 acre stormwater treatment wetland. La Porte man charged/arrested for rape and eight additional related felony counts

A La Porte man was charged with rape and eight additional related felony counts according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. Police say on Jan. 4, Deputy Ryan Doperalski was dispatched to a residence located in rural Pleasant Township regarding a sex offense. Initial information was gathered by Deputy Doperalski from the teenage female victim and her guardians. This information identified the suspect as 35 year old John M. Life-threatening condition discovered after trooper makes arrest

Indiana State police say a life-threatening condition was discovered after a trooper made an arrest following a pursuit on I-65 in Lake County Tuesday afternoon. At around 1:42 p.m.Troopers with the All Crimes Policing Team attempted to perform a traffic stop on a 2017 Nissan Maxima for traffic violations. Porter County Health Department provides details on COVID testing and vaccinations schedule

The Porter County COVID strike team has testing and vaccinations from noon to 8 p.m. through Saturday Feb. 12 at the Porter County Expo. Testing and vaccinations will also be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 17 through Saturday Feb. 19 at the Hebron Community Building at 611 N. Main St. on Wednesday Feb. 16, testing and vaccinations will open at 1 p.m. The COVID testing and vaccination team is a joint effort of the Porter County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health.

Gary Police give update on condition of officer who was shot

The Gary Police Department Tuesday gave an update on the condition of an officer who was shot Monday. Police said that as of Tuesday morning Sergeant Fazekas was still in stable condition and was expected to undergo surgery later in the day to repair his shoulder. The Gary Police Department also said that the Lake County Sheriff's Department is taking the lead on the investigation from this point forward. WIMS will continue to follow this story.

Portage Police: Child found both parents shot in home

Portage Police say a child found both of her parents shot when returning home on Tuesday. At approximately 2:52 p.m. officers of the Portage Police Department responded to the 5900 block of Marbella Avenue in response to a 911 call from a female juvenile reporting that she returned home to find her mother and father had been injured and were possibly deceased.  Upon officers’ arrival, a forty-five year old female victim was found inside near the front of the home.  The female had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was deceased.  A fifty-four year old male was found in another

Hoosiers with Disabilities can Save More and Experience Lower Fees

Because of recent changes to existing law, Hoosiers with disabilities are now able to save even more under the state’s INvestABLE Indiana program. Beginning January 1, 2022, the annual contribution limit for ABLE accounts increased from $15,000 to $16,000. This increase of over 6% will allow savers to deposit even more into their accounts and experience lower fees. Gary police officer Shot, one in custody

A Gary police officer was shot on Monday afternoon according to the Gary Police Department.  At approximately 12:57 PM the officer was shot while responding to a call of active shots fired. The officer, Sergeant William Fazekas is a 32-year-veteran of the police force. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The Gary Police Department said Monday afternoon that Sergeant Fazekas was in stable condition.  The Lake County Sheriff’s Department says one person was taken into custody at an abandoned building in the area near 4th and Buchanan. The investigation is ongoing.
