Health Department Announces Local Covid-19 Testing Effort

The Indiana Department of Health is partnering with local health departments around the state to add nearly 100 community testing sites for COVID-19. The state Department of Health is providing more than $30 million in funding to increase access to COVID-19 testing for Hoosiers over the next two years. All 94 local health departments in Indiana were invited to apply to the state for the grants to launch testing operations. Railroad Crossing Road Closure In Michigan City

In Michigan City, CSX Railroad began conducting repairs to the crossing at Ohio and Harrison Streets Wednesday morning. Unfortunately, they discovered the crossing was worse than anticipated. Further work needs to be accomplished and they are predicting a two-day repair and replacement. At this time, traffic will now be detoured to Arthur Street heading east to Buffalo Street, then headed back west to Ohio Street. The City will post updates on www.emichigancity.com

Vintage Car Club Donation

Recently a group of vintage car enthusiasts from Four A’s Car Club turned out at the Orak Shrine in Michigan City to donate $1,500.00 for the Shriners Children's Hospital. Traffic Stop Yields Two Firearms

Broadband Infrastructure Funding Announced

Governor Holcomb announced $51 million for 50 different broadband infrastructure expansion projects throughout the state. The funding as a part of the second round of the Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program. Funding will provide broadband infrastructure to nearly 10,600 homes and commercial locations in 32 counties.

Man Arrested After Hit and Run Pile Up

A Michigan City man was arrested after a Hit and Run spree Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday September 2nd at around 3:50 P.M., the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call indicating that a vehicle had struck several vehicles and overturned at the intersection of Franklin Street (US 421) and Kieffer Road (CR 400N), on the south end of Michigan City. NIPSCO Awards $50,000 in Public Safety Education and Training Grants

Sixteen organizations will receive grants from NIPSCO to help fund their safety education and training projects throughout northern Indiana. MCPD Investigating Four Shootings in Four Days

MCPD announced they are investigating 4 shooting cases in as many days. On Saturday August 29th at approximately 10:25 P.M., Officers in the parking lot of MCPD heard several shots being fired in the neighborhood north of the police station. While enroute to the area, 911 calls reporting shots being fired in the 300 Block of Springland Avenue were answered by the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center. In response to the recent increase in gun violence in Michigan City, the La Porte County Drug Task Force (LCDTF), which is a federally funded program through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) initiative, hasimmediately began conducting Violent Crime Reduction (VCR) patrols to proactively combat this unfortunate violence in Michigan City.
