Portage Streets and Sanitation Department tree limb update report

The Portage Streets and Sanitation Department gave a tree limb update report Wednesday. Today, limb crews will remain working in Zone 2. The crews completed 139 sizable piles.  One limb crew that was servicing zone 3 focused on the small limb piles that can be handled avoiding a large grapple truck.  They completed 89 small limb piles yesterday. Street department work zones NOT garbage day routes and have no association with trash service.   The street zones are the same in leaf service, snow removal and limb pickup. Update: Coroner Report in Chesterton officer involved shooting

*Update- Coroner Report* Indiana State Police Requested to Investigate Officer Involved Shooting in Chesterton The following statement was released by the Porter County Coroner, Cynthia M. Dykes: June 19, 2025 On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 8:16 AM, the Porter County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the area of 501 Gateway Blvd, Chesterton, regarding the death of a male. The decedent is identified as 45-year-old Joseph Gerber, of Winamac. Cause of Death: 1. self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head 2. multiple gunshot wounds Manner of Death: Suicide Toxicology is pending.

Flock Raven gunshot detection leads to another arrest in Michigan City

Michigan City police made an arrest Monday night after gunshot detection technology alerted them to an area where they found 72 shell casings and a man hiding. Just after 10:30 p.m., the Flock Raven gunshot detection system alerted to shots being fired near the 100 block of Seymour Avenue. Multiple officers responded to the area as well as a deputy from the Long Beach Police Department. The responding officers were approached by several neighborhood residents who indicated they heard multiple gunshots being fired. Closures today for Juneteenth

Michigan City Area Schools announced in honor of Juneteenth, there will be no Summer School on Thursday, June 19. There will be no Summer Food Service at the following locations: Knapp Elementary School Pine Elementary School Michigan City High School Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County (321 Detroit St.)   In honor of Juneteenth, the Michigan City park office and sticker office will be closed Thursday. MCPD officers attend Indiana School Resource Officer association Conference

This week, a group of officers from the Michigan City Police Department is attending the Indiana School Resource Officer Association (INSROA) Conference. "Throughout the week-long event, officers will participate in keynote presentations and breakout sessions designed to provide high-quality training," foster relationship-building, and connect valuable resources, MCPD said on their Facebook page. The goal is to better equip officers to serve and support the youth in schools. New sculptures placed in Michigan City

Two new sculptures have recently been placed in Michigan City, the Michigan City Public Art Committee announced on its Facebook page. 'Flight' is located in the grassy triangle behind City Hall and 'Tree of Life' is at Krueger Memorial Hall, 801 Liberty Trail. Both pieces are by Hildegard DeBruyne.

South Shore Line information for Chicago Fire FC game

To accommodate passengers attending the Chicago Fire FC game taking place at 7:30 p.m. on June 28, 2025, at Soldier Field, the South Shore Line plans to stop select trains at Metra’s 18th Street Station, which connects passengers directly to the Soldier Field entrance via a pedestrian walkway. As 18th St. Station is not a regularly scheduled stop, SSL passengers utilizing 18th St. for this event should purchase tickets for Museum Campus/11th Street. Health Department gifts AED to Chesterton Park Department for Thomas Centennial

The Town of Chesterton recently announced that the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) will provide a fully equipped automated external defibrillator (AED) to the Chesterton Park Department, under a memorandum of understanding unanimously approved by the Park Board at its meeting on Tuesday, June 3. According to the Town of Chesterton, Superintendent Tyler McLead told the Park Board, the PCHD has taken point on Porter County’s certification as a Heart Safe Community—a “nationally recognized program to improve cardiac arrest results and increase AED usage among the public”—and has identified Thomas Centennial Park as a “potential location” for the installation of

INDOT reminding drivers of US 39 closure today

INDOT is reminding the public that seal coating operations are underway in La Porte County with a road closure on State Road 39 between U.S. 20 and the Michigan State Line through today. Through traffic should seek alternate routes, and local traffic should exercise caution in the area. While the roadway is swept at the end of this process to remove loose stones, please slow down and increase distance from other vehicles when driving through recent seal coat work areas to prevent vehicle damage.

Roadwork: 153rd Avenue bridge over I-65 being replaced

In Lake County, an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor is replacing the 153rd Avenue bridge over I-65. 153rd Ave is now closed between Mississippi Street and Iowa Street/Grove Road while bridge replacement work is ongoing through mid-November. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow Clay Sreett, State Road 2 and State Road 55. During this project, there are daytime lane shifts and overnight lane closures as needed on I-65 in this location. LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing regarding an intersection improvement project at U.S. 231 and Iowa St on Tuesday, June 24 at 5 p.m. at Crown Point High School (1500 S Main Street, Crown Point, Indiana, 46307).
