Based on new information gathered by Lake County Sheriff’s Department investigators, a new suspect has been arrested in connection with the jail lobby fire that occurred on June 5, 2023.  The suspect is identified as 40-year-old Terrance Craig, of Gary.  He was booked into the Lake County Jail June 12, 2023. Two persons of interest were in custody in Hamilton County, Ohio, following an investigation into the death of a Lake County man found in the Chustak Public Fishing Area, on Tuesday, according to a Facebook post by the Chesterton police Department. "Independence Day is a favorite holiday for many of our residents," Snyder said. NEW CARLISLE, Ind. – Governor Eric Holcomb on Tuesday announced plans to bring a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant to St. Joseph County. The new battery cell plant, a joint venture between General Motors and Samsung SDI, is scheduled to begin operations in 2026. LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - An INDOT contractor will conduct bridge work resulting in lane closures on State Road 53/Broadway between 66th Place and 59th Avenue in Lake County on or after Monday, June 19. Press release by Michigan City Area Schools: The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) conducted a leadership camp at St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin from June 5th-9th. The camp’s objective was to improve on leadership skills that had been developed during the academic year, in a field environment. MCHS planned, organized and conducted the camp, which was also attended by cadets from Indianapolis Ben Davis, Romeoville, IL, and Portage high schools. Among the activities were rappelling, negotiating high wire obstacles, archery, land navigation, water survival, improvised raft building, paintball, and more.

A juvenile was charged with burglary and criminal mischief and more individuals are believed to be involved with the vandalism of vehicles, the City of La Porte Police Department said on Monday. On the morning of June 5, officers responded to a burglary at Carter’s Barbershop, located at 711 Jefferson Ave. Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that the suspect was a male juvenile.  During the investigation it was also learned that the same juvenile was directly involved with vandalizing over 20 vehicles on the east side of the city that same weekend. LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) plans to close their railroad crossing on U.S. 41 in Hammond between Gostlin St. and Chicago St. beginning on or after Monday, June 19. St. Luke United Lutheran Church in Trail Creek will hold its annual Vacation Bible Camp July 10-14. This popular all-day camp will run from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. - Noon on Friday. One person died Friday following a rollover crash in unincorporated Cedar Lake, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said. At around 10:20 a.m., officers responded to the scene of a rollover crash in the 11600 block of Wicker Avenue. Emergency medical personnel at the scene determined that the operator of the vehicle was deceased. The preliminary investigation determined that the driver was heading northbound on Wicker Avenue when the vehicle crossed into lanes of oncoming traffic.
