Beach cleanup to take place Saturday in Ogden Dunes

The Ogden Dunes Police Department has announced that beach cleanup will be this Saturday, Oct. 7 at 9:00 a.m. They ask to meet at Access #14 to help. Bags and gloves will be handed out for cleanup. All volunteers will receive a Cronoid bracelet. All chairs, towels, and toys must be removed before Saturday or they will be taken away. Only properly licensed kayaks and boats can remain on the beach after Saturday morning, the department said.

MCAS to launch local farm partnership during National School Lunch Week

Students attending Michigan City Area Schools will enjoy fruits, vegetables, and more provided by local farmers, thanks to a new program that will begin during National School Lunch Week, Oct. 9-13. MCAS has partnered with the NWI Food Council (NWIFC) to serve locally sourced food from area farmers for school lunches. Funding for the initiative is made possible through a Local Food for Schools grant awarded to the NWIFC by the Indiana Department of Health. The grant provides funds to NWIFC to purchase local products from Indiana farmers, such as vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, dairy, and grains, which the organization

La Porte Area Lake Association stocks walleye into Pine Lake

The La Porte Area Lake Association stocked 3,000 walleye into Pine Lake Wednesday morning, the City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department said on their Facebook page. The organization has been stocking fish into Pine Lake the past four years. Additionally, the lake association has used its funds to combat invasive aquatic vegetation in Pine and Stone lakes, particularly Eurasian watermilfoil. New early warning dashboard in Indiana seeks to elevate the importance of student attendance to academic and long-term success

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) Wednesday shared a first look at a new early warning dashboard, which is currently under development to help educators identify students who may be at risk of not graduating and, ultimately, direct resources accordingly. IDOE also presented the state’s most recent chronic absenteeism data, which increased significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, Indiana’s chronic absenteeism rate for the 2022-2023 school year was 19.3%, meaning nearly one in five students missed at least 10% of school days or about three and a half weeks. Michigan City woman charged in fatal crash after striking husband with car

A Michigan City woman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death after striking her husband with a vehicle Monday at the Tall Timbers Apartment complex. Just before 3 p.m., dispatch received a 911 call indicating that a Chrysler 200 had struck a pedestrian, and another vehicle, in the parking lot of the Tall Timbers apartment complex at the 3000 block of Springland Avenue. Fall hydrant flushing scheduled for this month in La Porte

The Water Department's biannual water system flushing will take place in two weeks, according to La Porte Water Superintendent Tim Werner. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 15 and continuing for three to four weeks, crews will be out to flush fire hydrants throughout the community Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Werner said this process is a critical part of maintaining the city’s water quality and infrastructure. La Porte County Sheriff’s Office gives update on administrative offices construction

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) gave an update Friday about the ongoing construction taking place at its administrative offices. Since the flood that occurred on Christmas Day last year, the administrative offices of the LCSO have been under construction, the LCSO said.  Work is progressing and is now scheduled to move into the lobby area of the agency. A tunnel from the south entry / exit doors of the La Porte County Complex extending to the main lobby of the Sheriff’s Office was erected Friday for the next phase of the project.  The tunnel will allow normal operations

DNR urges Indiana deer hunters to remember safety tips

With the deer reduction zone season underway and the statewide archery deer season starting Oct. 1, Indiana Conservation Officers remind hunters to stay safe. According to the DNR, more than 300,000 people are expected to participate in some form of deer hunting in Indiana during the various deer hunting seasons that run through Jan. 31, 2024, and the overwhelming majority typically do so safely. 13 Michigan City High School Students inducted into inaugural Computer Science Honor Society chapter

Michigan City High School inducted 13 students into its inaugural Computer Science Honor Society chapter Wednesday night. To qualify for induction, students must have been enrolled at MCHS for at least one semester, receiving a B or better in a Computer Science Course. MCHS now offers eight courses in Computer Science, with pathways in both Computer Science and Cybersecurity.
