Michigan City has been recognized as a ‘2022 Tree City USA’ by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management. Chesterton Fire Department introduced a new vehicle on Friday. The vehicle, a 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500, replaces a 2010 Chevy Tahoe. The vehicle's primary function is to respond to EMS calls. The department said,"It is staffed with two firefighters who respond to assist NW Health EMS."

A Chicago man was seriously injured early Friday after a crash on the Indiana Toll Road, Indiana State Police said. At around 3:53 a.m., a trooper responded to I-80/94 westbound ramp to the Indiana Toll Road for a vehicle crash.  A 2014 BMW 528 was traveling westbound on I-80 when for unknown reasons, the vehicle let the roadway, struck the guardrail and rolled onto its side. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Chicago, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The Portage Police Department recently congratulated Lieutenant Troy Williams on his retirement from the Portage Police Department. Williams began his career with PPD on Dec. 30, 1996.  Over the next twenty-six years Williams served as a patrol supervisor, field training officer, SWAT team member, state certified instructor in less than lethal devices, drug task force officer, school resource officer, and was chief of police from 2012 through 2019. During Williams’ career he earned thirteen letters of commendation, one Exceptional Service Award, was awarded the National School Safety Award, and was elected as the Portage Police Department’s Officer of the Year

The La Porte Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in a robbery that occurred Thursday evening at the Lincolnway Mini-Mart, located at 205 Lincolnway. The La Porte Police department stated the following: “After further investigation, it is believed that four male suspects are involved, and have also been caught on multiple surveillance cameras. “At approximately 7:16 p.m., a white male can be seen entering the store with a green Carhart sweatshirt on, while having the hood up with it tightened around his face. A sanitation worker at the Portage Streets and Sanitation department was honored earlier this week for a heroic act, the City of Portage stated on its Facebook page. John Thurman was honored Tuesday night by Portage Fire Department Chief Randy Wilkening and presented with the department's Community Life Saving Award. Thurman, who is a 14-year employee of the department, was on his sanitation route Jan. 31 when he saw smoke coming from a structure. He stopped and heard a voice calling for help. GARY, Ind. – A 6-year-old girl died in a crash that occurred early Wednesday on Interstate 80/94. At around 1:30 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a crash with occupant entrapment on the eastbound lanes of I-80/94 at the 7.5 mile-marker.  This is approximately 1.5 miles east of Burr Street.  Preliminary investigation showed that a 2016 Nissan Altima was stopped in the right lane.  A 2014 Volvo semi pulling a loaded trailer was traveling in the right lane. An investigation into gunshots being fired is ongoing in La Porte. On Feb. 24 at around 11:48 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Toronado Drive and Mustang Drive in reference to a shots fired call. Responding officers found three spent round casings laying near the intersection of Toronado and Mustang. Responding officers were able to retrieve video surveillance from a nearby residence. The video surveillance showed a vehicle driving through the intersection when shots being fired could be heard. Board-certified endocrinologist and internal medicine doctor Fatima Kazi, MD, is now part of the Franciscan Physician Network and is accepting new patients in Munster. Dr. Kazi completed her training at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Three men have been arrested in connection to an armed robbery that happened last month, the Michigan City Police Department announced Tuesday. An officer was patrolling the Eastport area of the city during the early morning hours of Feb. 21 when he heard someone yelling for help. He soon came into contact with a 22-year-old male who reported he had been the victim of an armed robbery near the intersection of Michigan Boulevard and Ridgeland Avenue. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says an old scam has resurfaced in the county in which elderly citizens are being preyed upon and swindled out of large sums of money. Several citizens are reporting as to having received a phone call from someone claiming to be a relative or a representative of their relative. The caller is telling the citizen they, or whom they represent, are incarcerated, and need money. Police say an elderly citizen received one of these calls last week. Being concerned about the relative, the citizen continued to speak with the scammers throughout the day as they

The Indiana Toll Road has announced that construction has begun on their 2023 Northwest Indiana Bridge Rehabilitation Project. Construction is on six bridges on I-90 around Westpoint (Exit 1) Toll Plaza (Illinois/Indiana Stateline), followed on March 20 with 12 bridges on I-90 at Cline Avenue (Exit 10) (Gary/Chicago International Airport). In addition, guardrail improvements will take place between Cline Avenue (Exit 10) to Calumet Avenue (Exit 5) in Hammond. The Town of Chesterton is seeking an Indiana READI grant to help fund new police station, according to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page. The Town of Chesterton stated, “In 2021, the Northwest Indiana Forum (NIF) received $50 million from Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI) program, a $500-million effort to jump-start economic development and place-making in 17 regions throughout the State of Indiana. “Now Gov.
