Indiana Department of Education Accepting Applications for Second Round of Accelerated Learning Grant Program

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is now accepting applications to fund community and school partnerships through Indiana’s new Student Learning Recovery Grant Program and Fund. With the goal of accelerating student learning, $27.5 million is now available through the grant’s second funding round. Created this year through House Enrolled Act 1008, the Student Learning Recovery Grant Program and Fund allocated $150 million to support accelerated learning plans, with a focus on partnerships between community organizations, education service centers, higher education institutions and K-12 schools. Bridge maintenance to cause lane closures and shifts on I-94

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. - Watch for overnight lane closures and lane shifts on eastbound and westbound I-94 between U.S. 20 in Burns Harbor and State Road 49 beginning Sunday, Oct. 24. From around 8 p.m. Sunday, October 24 to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, the two left lanes of I-94 will be closed in both directions. These restrictions will be in place to implement the maintenance of traffic plan for bridge work over Norfolk Southern Railway at mile marker 23.5.  Beginning in the morning on Monday, Oct. 25, three lanes will be open in each direction but will be shifted

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office investigating catalytic converter thefts

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating catalytic converter thefts out of Springfield Township. Indiana State Department of Health COVID county advisory levels updated

The Indiana State Department of health updated their weekly COVID county advisory level map on Wednesday. La Porte, Porter, and Lake counties remain at a score of 1.5, yellow level. St. Joseph County has moved down from a score of 2, orange level to a score of 1.5, yellow level. Starke County remains at a score of 3, red level. Jasper County remains at a score of 2.5, orange level. Newton County has moved up from a score of 1.5, yellow level to a score of 2, orange level.

Franciscan Health hospitals lauded by state for infant, maternal care

Franciscan Health hospitals in Crown Point and Michigan City have been recognized by the Indiana Hospital Association (IHA), in partnership with Governor Eric J. Holcomb and State Health Commissioner Kris Box, MD, for their commitment to infant and maternal health at the second annual INspire Hospital of Distinction recognition program. Franciscan Health Hammond also received a Center of Excellence distinction. INspire, funded by the Indiana Department of Health’s Safety PIN grant, was developed to implement the delivery of best practice care for Hoosier moms and babies and recognize hospitals for excellence in addressing key drivers of infant and maternal health.

Haller Foundation, Walther Foundation donate $1.5 million to Purdue for endowed professorship in cancer biology

A $750,000 donation from the Henry E. Haller Jr. Foundation has endowed a professorship that will support the work of the Purdue Center for Cancer Research and the College of Science in cancer biology. The gift was matched by the Walther Cancer Foundation for a total of $1.5 million. The endowment will be known as the Boyce Haller Professorship. La Porte County Sheriff’s Office conducting death investigation in Michigan City

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation in Michigan City.  On Tuesday, at around 12:09 pm, the La Porte County Regional 911 Center received a 911 call that reported that there was possibly a deceased person in a home located in the 3000 block of Edgebrook in Weatherstone Village mobile home park, which is located in Coolspring Township. Deputies arrived a short while later and attempted to establish contact with anyone inside the residence. Crisis Negotiators were eventually able to contact a person who was in the home and he agreed to exit without incident. Deputies

Memorial service for perinatal loss in Michigan City recognizes the grief families feel after a lost pregnancy

While pregnancy is a time of excitement and anticipation, the loss of a pregnancy or newborn is a heartbreaking experience, especially for the child’s parents. Franciscan Health recognizes the pain that families go through in perinatal loss and provides services to those seeking care and comfort. Twice a year, Franciscan Health Michigan City holds a memorial service to remember these children. The public is invited to take part in “Remembering Our Babies” at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 30, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, 1015 Greenwood Ave. in Michigan City. Attendees are requested to wear facemasks and observe social distancing recommendations.

Robotic lung surgery arrives at Franciscan Health Crown Point, lung scans being offered

 Robotic lung surgery, a minimally invasive technique that has advantages over traditional surgical methods, is now benefiting patients at Franciscan Health Crown Point. Lead breast radiologist joins Franciscan Health in push for breast cancer screenings

During October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff at the Franciscan Health Breast Center Michigan City emphasize their work to remove barriers and enhance opportunities for early detection. Mammography technician Julie Lemon says women should get a mammogram at age 40, or earlier if their family has a history of breast cancer.  For a screening mammogram, an order from a doctor is not needed, but patients must have a doctor they have seen in recent years to take the report. Michigan City Police have released a video along with photos of the suspect involved in the Sept. 30 robbery of Horizon Bank.  The video has been posted to the Michigan City Police Department Facebook page. Lane Closures on U.S. 30 in LaPorte and Starke counties

In LaPorte and Starke counties, U.S. 30 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between State Road 39 and U.S. 35 beginning "on or after" Monday, Oct. 18 for bridge work over the Kankakee River and Shearing Ditch. Lane closures will alternate between the passing and driving lanes. Work will be ongoing for approximately five days, and all schedules are weather dependent.

Food Bank of Northern Indiana mobile food distribution in Michigan City on Monday

There will be a mobile food distribution in Michigan City at Marquette Mall outside the old Carson Pirie Scott store on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. United Way, through a partnership with Food Bank and CCH, is providing both non-perishable and produce, offered free of charge. All items will be pre-boxed. The event is first come, first served, for up to 250 households, while supplies last. The limit is one box per household. The event is for those in need of food assistance.
