The Salvation Army offers additional shelter space to homeless during cold weather MICHIGAN CITY-Due to extreme cold, The Salvation Army of Michigan City will be opening a temporary emergency overnight shelter for adults, beginning Tuesday, January 14. Unhoused adults in need over overnight shelter are welcome to visit The Salvation Army of Michigan City, 1201 S. Franklin Street. The shelter will be open on nights when the forecasted overnight temperatures are below 32 degrees in Michigan City, operating from 7pm until 7am. On Friday, January 10th, Trooper Carlson responded to a vehicle crash that occurred on southbound I-65 near the 206 mile-marker. This location is a mile north of the Rensselaer/Remington exit.  It was a single vehicle crash, minor damage, and required a pullout for a 2008 Toyota Camry. During the crash investigation, it was determined that the driver was lying about his identity and was actually wanted on a probation violation through Ohio for past violent crimes. While trying to detain the driver, he forcibly pulled away and ran across all lanes of I-65 almost causing several accidents in the inclement weather.

At 4:32 p.m. Thursday afternoon St. Joseph County Police were dispatched to the 800 block of Coronation Gardens in Castle Point Apartments for a report of a domestic stabbing. A caller reported her son had stabbed her husband. Officers arrived to find a Lee Alexis, age 34, with stab wounds to the chest. Medical personnel immediately transported Alexis to the emergency room. A short time later  in another area of Castle Point, officers located and detained Alexis' stepson Corey Antoine Demetris Young, age 21. Lee Alexis passed away at the hospital Thursday evening and an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday. Corey

Sheriff Ronald C. Heeg officially announces the recent division transfer of Deputy Adam S. Needles from the Jail Division to the Merit (Patrol) Division, effective December 21, 2024. Deputy Needles was born in Valparaiso and is a 2019 graduate of Valparaiso High School. Following graduation, he attended Indiana University. In May of 2023, Deputy Needles graduated from IU with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies and a minor in Biology.
