Joey Lee Krygsheld was the last baby born at the now-former Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital’s Family Birth Center at 1201 S. Main St. to parents Caitlin and Joel Krygsheld of Cedar Lake. The Town of Chesterton says the alley between 11th and 12th streets to the east and west, and between West Indiana Avenue and West Morgan Avenue to the north and south, has been closed to traffic, after a sanitary sewer sinkhole was discovered Monday. The Chesterton Utility’s Collection Crew was on site Monday with the Vactor truck to keep the sewer main pumped down. Last Friday (1/26) deputies were investigating a personal injury crash involving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and a box truck along US 20 near Oak Knoll Road.   At approximately 2:20 PM, eastbound US 20 vehicular traffic was closed for the recovery of the CM. Sergeant L. Scott Boswell parked his commission in the eastbound driving lane and a Kankakee Volunteer Fire Department apparatus was parked in the eastbound passing lane. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) awarded more than $454,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to 101 rural and volunteer fire departments from 58 counties. The awards will be used to fund training or purchase necessary firefighting equipment and gear to combat wildland fires. The grants are administered by the DNR Division of Forestry and made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
