The National Park Service (NPS) is announcing plans to burn a large debris pile at Indiana Dunes National Park’s Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site over the next three weeks. The debris pile is located next to the beach. “Over the last several years storms have deposited large tree size pieces of driftwood along the beach,” NPS said  “The material is planned to be burned when weather conditions allow in the next three weeks. Indiana will expand its Pregnancy Promise Program to support more expectant and new mothers with substance use disorders. Burns Harbor police officers encountered a possible suspect who was entering unlocked vehicles and stealing items from them. Police saw the suspect Thursday at about 3:30 a.m. The suspect fled from officers in a silver SUV into the Gary area. CROWN POINT, Ind. – Casimira Bilinski of Calumet City, Ill. won Monday’s 2024 apple peeling contest at the Lake County Indiana Fair’s Senior Day, sponsored by Franciscan Health. A body was found in a pond Wednesday morning in Crown Point, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Crown Point Police received a report of a body in a pond in the Ellendale Farm subdivision. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday they were awaiting formal identification of the deceased from family members and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will have overnight lane closures on I-65 between U.S. 30 and I-94 on or after Sunday, August 11. Lane closures will be in place nightly Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. Crews will be performing slab jacking operations for approximately three weeks. Motorists should be alert for work crews and changing traffic patterns. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

LAKE COUNTY - Early Tuesday morning, troopers with the Indiana State Police Lowell Post responded to a vehicle crash on I-65 which resulted in multiple injuries and has caused significant traffic delays. At about 4:16 a.m. CST, a crash occurred between three semis near the 238 mile-marker in the northbound lanes of I-65,  two miles south of the Lowell exit. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2022 Volvo tractor with trailer was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the roadway. INDOT maintenance crews are scrub sealing State Road 55 between U.S. 24 and State Road 16. The road will be closed to through traffic during daytime work hours through approximately Tuesday or Wednesday. INDOT is asking drivers to seek alternate routes. According to INDOT, a scrub seal is an application that is very close to a chip seal treatment where asphalt emulsion and crushed rock are placed on an asphalt pavement surface. INDOT says the only difference is that the asphalt emulsion is applied to the road surface through a series of brooms placed at different angles, and a fog
