A man that was wanted for multiple felonies, including rape, led troopers on a pursuit in Lake County early Wednesday. Just before 3:50 a.m., a trooper stopped an SUV for speeding on I-65 near the 252 mile-marker, in Merrillville. While speaking with the driver, the driver began to panic and while acting like he was looking for his driver’s license, he placed the SUV into gear and fled. City of La Porte Police Chief Brettin swore in Alexander Mendoza, Peter Pienta, Dalton Pflughaupt, and Patrick Quail on Wednesday as new Patrol Officers for the LaPorte City Police Department. Chief Brettin also swore in Anthony Ring as a Reserve Officer for the LaPorte Police Department. Anthony is currently employed with the LaPorte Fire Department. Anthony swore in as a Reserve Officer to become a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) currently being put together for the LaPorte Police Department. Anthony is a Emergency Medical Technician whom will assist The ERT team with their duties.  

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau has identified a vehicle of interest that may be associated with a fatal traffic crash that occurred February 20, in Niles.  On Sunday, at approximately 4:42AM a 9-1-1 call was received involving a vehicle vs pedestrian accident in the area of South 3rd Street and Brooks Street, Niles Township. Berrien County Sheriff Deputies and additional first responders were dispatched to the scene identifying a female subject, Monica Clubb of Niles, seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is stepping up patrols to help curb dangerous and aggressive driving.  The enforcement campaign runs through Monday, March 21. The safety initiative is designed to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities and to promote safe driving around St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament.  It also comes at a time when roadway deaths continue to climb across the state and nation. The LCSO says in response, deputies are conducting high-visibility patrols over the next several weeks, showing zero tolerance for anyone driving aggressively, over the speed limit or under the influence.   The LCSO says

The Indiana DNR has named 22 year-old Bryce Dunfee, of Indianapolis as the person who went missing Monday afternoon at Indiana Dunes National Park.  The DNR says Dunfee was last seen wearing a gray shirt with black sleeves, khaki pants, and black shoes. The search is still ongoing. Monday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. responders were dispatched to West Beach at Indiana Dunes National Park reference a person in the water. The Michigan City Police Department swore in three new probationary officers on Tuesday. The probationary officers had undergone an extensive hiring process which began with over 25 potential candidates. The probationary officers will endure six weeks of in-house training with the Division of Professional Standards. Upon completion of the training, they will begin the Field Training Officer Program where they will be working within the community with their respective training officers until spaces are available for them to attend the 15-week Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course. The Indiana Department of Health Wednesday updated its weekly COVID county metric scores.  LaPorte, Porter, St. Joseph and Starke counties have moved down from a score of 2.5 to a score of 1. Porter and Newton counties have moved down from a score of 2.5, to a score of 1.5. Lake County has moved from a score of 1.5 to a score of 1. The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners are investigating four consumer complaints of infant illness related to products from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, MI facility received from 9/20/2021 to 1/11/2022. All of the cases are reported to have consumed powdered infant formula (IF) produced from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, MI facility. These complaints include three reports of Cronobacter sakazakii infections and one report of Salmonella Newport infection in infants. All four cases related to these complaints were hospitalized and Cronobacter may have contributed to a death in one case. FDA has initiated an onsite inspection at the facility. NICTD released a new construction update for NICTD’s Double Track Northwest Indiana project: Gary- Miller Station Area   For the Double Track project’s new Miller parking lot, demolition of structures began the week of 12/6/2021. NICTD’s Double Track Contract 3 received a Notice to Proceed 9/9/2021 and construction is expected to begin at the east parking lot Spring of 2022.    Sewer work will begin in the south portion of the existing parking lot (west of Lake St) in March 2022. The South Shore Line announced that in order to accommodate construction for the Double Track NWI project, it is implementing a long-term busing schedule for passengers between Dune Park and Carroll Avenue stations. Beginning Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, and lasting through fall 2022, busing between the stations will be ongoing for all weekday and weekend trains. Dune Park to Carroll Avenue bus service will operate on the regular SSL train time schedule. Loop bus service will be provided provided to Michigan City 11th St. (bus stop located at 920 Franklin St.) and Beverly Shores Station. Loop buses will not operate

The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division Lowell Post was requested to investigate missing funds from the Northlake Pop Warner Little Scholars program in Hammond, as well as the Griffith Pop Warner Little Scholars program.  During the course of each of these investigations, it was determined that funds were missing from the accounts of each of these programs.   As a result, felony charges have been filed in each case for 31-year-old Raymond Balderrama, from Whiting (Nothlake Pop Warner) and 45-year-old Robert L.
