The Indiana Department of Health is sharing the information that the FDA is investigating consumer complaints of Cronobacter and Salmonella infections. All of the cases are reported to have consumed powdered infant formula produced from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, MI facility. The La Porte County Family YMCA has announced that through a donation, their Michigan City Elston branch now has three new row machines. The Y says the new machines will help to take your cardiovascular endurance to a new level. See their wellness staff for a tutorial of how they work. Two of the machines are located in the cardio room and one is in the upstairs workout room.
The Michigan City Police Department released its year-end totals for Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR). The UCR is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of more than 18,000 city, university and college, county, state, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies voluntarily reporting data on crimes brought to their attention. Michigan City Police announces that Overall Crime Rate is up 0.10%. Overall Calls for Service is down from 41,522 in 2020 to 37,355 in 2021, however MCPD has seen an increase in Reports Completed from 5,088 in to 5,767 in 2021. Total Arrest made in 2021 also saw an increase to 1,963 (2021)
The La Porte County Department of Health has announced that beginning Wednesday, Feb. 23, the LPCHD COVID Vaccine clinic will be located at 901 Lincolnway, (Corner of Lincolnway and Madison) in La Porte. Clinic hours will remain the same: Monday,Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m-6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The phone number is 219-326-6808 ext 7101. Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry recently issued an Executive Order for Michigan City government buildings to re-open to the public and allow boards and commissions to resume in-person meetings. Effective Tuesday, Feb. 22, Michigan City government buildings, including City Hall, will re-open to the general public without the necessity of advanced appointments. Also, effective Monday, Feb. 28, all Michigan City Boards/Commissions may resume in-person meetings.
Indiana Conservation Officers announced Thursday they have arrested three Chicago men on multiple wildlife violations. The arrests stem from an investigation that originated on the evening of Feb. 15, when conservation officers were contacted after witnesses reported shots coming from a vehicle illuminating a rural area with a spotlight. Shortly after the call, a Newton County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle matching the suspected vehicle commit a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop. While on the stop, the deputy observed blood on the vehicle’s license plate and a freshly killed deer in the bed of the truck. Conservation officers
A conservation officer Thursday evening helped out an elderly couple who was lost and looking for Indiana Dunes State Park campground, according to Indiana DNR Law Enforcement. A District 10 Conservation Officer found an elderly couple in a camper van. They had decided the road conditions were too poor to continue their cross country trip to Georgia and left the interstate looking for the campground. Due to the weather conditions, the couple became lost until approached by the officer who led them to their campsite.

Mayor Tom Dermody of LaPorte has issued a snow emergency for the City of La Porte. The City of La Porte snow emergency is in effect through February 19, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. Parking is permitted on the odd side of the street from through 6 p.m. Friday. Franciscan Health says it will expand its effort to address food insecurity during the coming year, thanks to a matching gift challenge, which raised $100,000 for the Franciscan Health Foundation. Franciscan Health launched its drive to combat food insecurity plaguing Northwest Indiana, collaborating last year with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and the School City of Hammond to provide healthy food boxes for vulnerable families. The Indiana Department of Health Wednesday updated its weekly COVID county advisory levels. Currently in our area, LaPorte, Porter, St. Joseph and Starke counties are at a score of 2.5 orange level. Newton is also in an orange level with a score of 2.5. Lake and Jasper counties have a score of 1.5 in the yellow level. Positivity rates are down in all of the local counties mentioned. Starting this coming Monday, Feb. 21, the Porter County Sheriff’s Office says it will be enforcing the Frost Law Ordinance. Officers from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and Gary Police Department are investigating after a 15-year-old boy allegedly assaulted his mother, stole her SUV and caused a fatal crash Tuesday morning. At approximately 8:15 a.m., the Gary Police Department requested the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit to respond to the scene of a two-vehicle crash with one fatality and one serious injury at E. 39th Avenue and Georgia Street in Gary. Horizon Bank announced a grant has been awarded to Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) in Michigan City. The grant awarded was for $30,000 to be paid over a three year period. NIPSCO is accepting applications for its Environmental Action Grant to support local nonprofit organizations with environmental initiatives, the company has announced. In its seventh year, NIPSCO’s grant provides $60,000 in funding for environmental restoration and education projects throughout the NIPSCO service territory. Last year’s 18 grant recipients included environmental groups, community groups, schools and other nonprofit organizations. Projects included wetland restoration, the Smithsonian water/ways education exhibit, forest school programming support, pollinator protection initiatives, outdoor and environmental education and several projects at the Indiana Dunes, Indiana’s National Park. The LaPorte County Health Department announced that a free COVID- 19 testing and vaccination clinic will take place now through Saturday Feb. 19 from 2 p.m. through 6 p.m. daily, in Michigan City at the Salvation Army located at 1201 S.
