Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced today that Hoosiers should expect to begin receiving their promised $125 Automatic Taxpayer Refund in the coming weeks, resulting in a 12 percent cut in the average Hoosier’s annual income tax liability. “I’m beyond thrilled that this spring and summer we are returning money back into the hands of Hoosier taxpayers, where it belongs,” Gov. On Tuesday, Edgewood Elementary School in Michigan City received a donation of nearly $50,000 in school supplies from Enchanted Backpack. The delivery was greeted by Edgewood students, teachers, and staff in a celebration just outside the school doors. Included were classroom supplies, winter coats, hygiene products, books, playground equipment, and more.  Principal Kristin Smith of Edgewood Elementary said this donation helps all 369 Edgewood students accomplish much more socially, emotionally, and academically. The City of Valparaiso has become Indiana’s first Monarch City, USA, recognized by the nonprofit organization Monarch City, USA, for the city’s work to support the monarch population by providing habitats and awareness. Monarch butterflies are threatened worldwide as their habitats of milkweed and other nectar plans are vanishing. More than a billion monarch butterflies have vanished since 1990, according to data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Michigan City Area Schools has announced a new partnership with Diversity Squared, aimed at connecting graduating high school seniors to employment and other post-secondary opportunities in the region. The “City Connect” program will supplement existing school counseling efforts, serving approximately 50 Michigan City High School seniors who have not established firm post-graduation plans. Diversity Squared, a consulting firm with strong workforce preparation and placement experience, will assist these students through one-on-one and small-group sessions, helping them determine next steps aligned with their areas of interest. The Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City announced Monday that the African Lions and the Bengal Tigers will soon have more room at the WPZoo. The zoo says it will soon start work on a  $1.6 million dollar habitat expansion project to “Build for the Big Cats”.   The construction start date has yet to be announced. The Town of Chesterton announced on its Facebook page that the town's park board selected Tyler McLead as their new park superintendent. At its meeting last Wednesday, the Park Board voted unanimously to make McLead the new Park Superintendent. The position has been vacant since the resignation of Shane Griffin in January. Current Park Board Member and retired superintendent Bruce Mathias has been serving under contract as Interim Superintendent. McLead’s first day on the job: Monday, May 2. A driver was arrested for OWI Friday morning after being over 5 times the legal limit. Troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell Friday morning, 911 callers contacted the post to report an erratic driver traveling northbound on I-65. Trooper Stancy and Trooper Runyon located the vehicle and were able to get the driver to stop near the 243 mile-marker (north of the Lowell exit). Police say that during the investigation, the driver could barely stand without falling over. Out of an abundance of caution, an ambulance was called and the driver was transported to a hospital for an evaluation.

Valparaiso Police Chief Jeff Balon announced Friday another graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command. The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department recently welcomed the Steady Stitchers Sewing Group to its new “home” in the park facility at 1640 First St. The group, which is part of Purdue Extension Homemakers, takes in donations and makes items to donate to the less fortunate in the community. As part of the transition to operating the Activity Center for Older Adults, the department collaborated with other community partners to move the Steady Stitchers from the basement. The group celebrated the new location with its Lend-A-Hand Day Thursday, drawing dozens of volunteers to help with sewing projects.

LAPORTE COUNTY- The State Road 8 bridge over the Kankakee River, four miles east of La Crosse, will be closed for maintenance starting Monday at 7 a.m. State Road 8 will be closed between County Road South 600 West and State Road 39, at South 600 West., until June 22 at about 5:00 p.m. The Indiana Department of Transportation says motorists should use the official detour of U.S. 421 north to U.S. 30 east to State Road 39 south.

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) announced it received approval on Friday from the Purdue University Board of Trustees to offer a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity degree. PNW plans to transition current undergraduates and welcome new students into the program during the 2022-23 academic year, pending approval by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. PNW students currently enrolled in the bachelor’s of Computer Information Technology degree, with a concentration in Cybersecurity, would be eligible to transition to the new Cybersecurity bachelor’s degree. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office said on a Facebook post Thursday that concerned citizens are reporting the arrival of "suspicious subjects" at their residences.   Police say, the unidentified males are telling homeowners they are affiliated with ADT Security Services. Police advise the public that “this bad acting duo” are not representatives of ADT and to not allow them inside your residence.

The Valparaiso Police Department is seeking the assistance in locating missing teen, Julian Rebeles, of Valparaiso. Julian is described as a 14-year-old male, 6 feet tall, 160 pounds, with brown hair, and brown eyes. Rebeles was last seen at his home in Valparaiso by his family on March 12. Police say they “have indicators that he has left Valparaiso; however, may be with friends in the northwest Indiana or Chicagoland region.” Police are looking for any assistance that may lead to Julian’s location, past or present.
