Saturday morning at approximately 1:51 a.m., Trooper William Stancy was working on I-80/94 near the 2 mile-marker.  A vehicle was clocked traveling eastbound at 95 mph.  The speed limit on the roadway is posted 55 mph.  As Trp. The Salvation Army of Michigan City had a pleasant surprise over the weekend as the red kettle donations from last Friday were being counted for the day. A gold coin – a $50 American buffalo coin – was dropped into the kettle located at Hobby Lobby sometime on Friday. Major Becky Simmons, who oversees the local Salvation Army with her husband, Major Dale Simmons, is the one who discovered the coin as she was processing that day’s kettle contributions. Millions of Americans are traveling over the Holiday period, with the majority traveling by automobile. What this means for Hoosiers is more traffic on the highways. To help ensure the safety of all motorists, the Indiana State Police is participating in Operation C.A.R.E., or Combined Accident Reduction Effort, through January 2nd.Operation C.A.R.E. is a federally funded program that allows additional troopers to patrol Hoosier roadways looking for drivers that are driving aggressively or impaired.

One of Tom Dermody’s first priorities as LaPorte’s mayor-elect has been the selection of a team of department heads dedicated to transparent and customer-centric service in city government. To lead the future of code compliance, Dermody has named former LaPorte Slicer Jeff Batchelor as code compliance director. The DNR is seeking nominations for five openings on the state’s Indiana Trails Advisory Board (TAB). The openings are for representatives of the following trail-user groups: environmental groups, hikers, mountain bikers, trail support groups, and users with disabilities. Nominations will be accepted by the DNR Division of Outdoor Recreation through Dec. 30. Nominees should be involved with a regional or statewide organization, club or association related to the trail-user group they would represent. The Indiana Securities Division has finalized updates on its revamped web portal for filings and payments, Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced on Wednesday. The Securities Portal initially launched in December 2018. The updated Securities Portal continues the trend of the office working to modernize state government, following the development of the highly acclaimed INBiz portal for businesses, and the streamlined application database for Indiana Notaries Public. State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) presented a Distinguished Hoosier Award to long-time La Crosse Town Councilman Bob Wheeler on Tuesday, Dec. 17th at Wheeler’s final town council meeting in La Crosse. Distinguished Hoosier awards are given by the governor to those who possess the qualities and characteristics that reflect the best of Indiana. Pressel said Wheeler, who served on the council for 30 years, is an outstanding community leader and has been instrumental in numerous town projects throughout his tenure.

As excitement builds for the opening of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Franciscan Health staff joined the celebration by providing newborns with hand-knit caps inspired by the “Baby Yoda” character from the TV series “The Mandalorian.” Michigan City, Crown Point and Hammond hospitals took part in giving out the knit-hats. The “Yoda” caps are created by Erin Ollis of Crown Point, Her favorite childhood movie was Star Wars and she is grateful to the Crafty Grannies of First United Methodist Church of Crown Point for donating some of the yarn for this project.

Two outstanding La Porte County students have been named recipients of full tuition, four-year scholarships as Unity Foundation of La Porte County 2020 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. Katelyn Adams and Logan Crawford will receive tuition to an accredited public or private Indiana college or university of their choice, and an annual $900 stipend for required books and equipment. Katelyn Adams will graduate with academic honors from South Central High School, having taken both advanced placement and honors courses. On Tuesday, Porter County Commissioners declared an emergency disaster for the Porter County lakefront in response to the significant erosion of the Lake Michigan shoreline. State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Ogden Dunes) gave the following response to the emergency declaration: “The substantial erosion of the shoreline this season is threatening private homes and public infrastructure. Porter County rightfully just declared an emergency, and Beverly Shores is expected to pass a resolution declaring an emergency this evening at their town council meeting. DYER | It may not be the North Pole, but Santa’s elves have nothing on the group of volunteers who gathered recently inside an auto shop to box and wrap 375 presents for needy families in Northwest Indiana.
