MCHS MCJROTC Conducts Presentation at Krueger Middle School

Press release, Michigan City Area Schools: The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) conducted a presentation at Kreuger Middle School on February 5th to familiarize the 8th graders with the program prior to scheduling their courses for the 2025-2026 school year. Franciscan Health offering free Produce Prescription Program in Munster

MUNSTER, Ind. -- Registration is now open for the Franciscan Health Produce Prescription Program in Munster, which aims to assist with chronic disease management. Upon successful completion of the free, four-week program, participants will receive produce vouchers for fresh produce every month for six months. Participants must have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, heart disease or cancer; meet other criteria as determined by a screening process and complete a four-week Cooking Matters course. Portage Police seek community assistance after remains of missing Hobart woman found

The Portage Police Department have launched an investigation after the remains of a missing Hobart woman have been found. Portage Detectives began investigating the cold-case disappearance of Shannon Orton in the summer of 2023 after being contacted by the Hobart Police Department with new information. Orton disappeared from Cressmoor Mobile Home Park located in Hobart, IN in the summer of 2020. Recently, the remains of Shannon Orton were discovered in Portage, IN. Here is the latest from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office regarding a motor vehicle pursuit whihc resulted in two arrests.  Yesterday at 9:50 AM, a Highway Interdiction Deputy was monitoring eastbound traffic on the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) at the 56-mile marker. A white Jaguar was found to be traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the area of the 62-mile marker. Rogers Lakewood Park to temporarily close in Valpo to restore habitat

Valpo Parks announced that in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, they will be restoring vital habitat at Rogers Lakewood Park by controlling and managing invasive woody plants that threaten the park’s ecosystem. For safety, the park will be closed Feb. 9-12 as crews remove invasive brush from approximately 30 acres of woodland. This project will enhance forest structure, diversity, and overall park health. Lake County Sheriff’s Department saves dog trapped on roof of house

Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers launched a rescue Tuesday to save a dog that made its way to the roof of a three-story house. Two hospitalized in Lake County head-on collision

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -- Two drivers were hospitalized after a head-on collision Saturday in Lake County, according to Sheriff Oscar Martinez. On Saturday, at around 4:35 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Department patrol units were dispatched to the area of 2100 W. 169th Avenue in unincorporated Lowell for a two-vehicle crash with injuries. LaPorte Brothers Sentenced to Prison for Fraud Scheme  

SOUTH BEND – Raymond Calvin Smith, 27 years old, and Bruce Milik Smith, 25 years old, brothers from LaPorte, Indiana, were sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after pleading guilty to federal felony charges, announced Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay. Raymond Smith was sentenced to 70 months in prison and 2 years of supervised release. Bruce Smith was sentenced to 39 months in prison and 2 years of supervised release. The two brothers were ordered to pay $723,832.64 in restitution to the victims of their offense.
