Franklin Street to be closed up to 2 weeks starting Friday 10/04/24

MICHIGAN CITY – Franklin Street between Green Street / Detroit Street and 9th Street will be closed for approximately two weeks beginning Friday, Oct. 4, with a detour rerouting traffic to the west via Washington Street.   The closure will allow for the construction of multiple sewer lateral taps into sanitary and storm sewers associated with the development of the new Station Block between 10th and 11th streets, as well as the reprofiling of Franklin Street in accordance with Community Crossings Matching Grant requirements.   The public is advised to travel an alternate route to avoid construction-related traffic delays

Arrests made in Homicide Investigation

On December 3, 2022, at approximately 12:55am, Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 3 were dispatched to the 700 Block of E 10th St in reference to shots being fired. Officers arrived on scene and discovered 43 year old, Randy Edwards, lying on the ground with apparent life-threatening injuries. A female victim had also been shot. Officers began life saving measures and both subjects were immediately transported to Franciscan Health by LaPorte County EMS where Mr. Edwards was later pronounced deceased.   Det./Sgt. Chesterton Town Council enacts new recreation impact fee schedule

The Town of Chesterton is enacting a new recreation impact fee schedule. The Town of Chesterton stated the following on their Facebook page: Over the next 10 years, the Town of Chesterton’s population could grow by 1,880 people: From an estimated 14,240 in 2023 to 16,120 in 2033, assuming an average annual growth rate of 1.25 percent and a total of 783 new single-family households. Those are the calculations run by Charles Lehman of Lehman & Lehman, the consultancy retained by the Park Board to prepare a study on the next five-year recreation impact fee to be charged to builders.

U.S. 6/State Road 51 bridge over I-94 to be replaced

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - An INDOT contractor will have lane closures on U.S. 6/State Road 51 over I-94 beginning on or after Monday, Sept. 30. U.S. 6/State Road 51 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through mid-November. Work will begin with the inside left lanes closed in each direction and then switch to the outside right lanes closed around mid-October. There will be shoulder closures on some of the ramps at this interchange, but all ramps will remain open and accessible. State Road 16 to close east of Brook in Newton County

NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. - An INDOT contractor will close State Road 16 between County Road 300 East and State Road 55 on or after Monday, September 30. State Road 16 will be closed through mid-October for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project over the Iroquois River. INDOT says motorists should seek alternate routes.
