Life-saving efforts performed by La Porte County deputy on Christmas Eve

La Porte County is the 2nd largest county in Indiana by square miles. All too often, deputies find themselves great distances away from emergency calls for service, where seconds can be the difference between life and death. On Christmas Eve though, that was not the case for one deputy. U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern District of Indiana collects over $6.6 million in civil and criminal actions in fiscal year 2021

U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson announced Thursday that the Northern District of Indiana collected $6,637,580.30 in criminal and civil actions in Fiscal Year 2021. Of this amount, $5,174,664.80 was collected in criminal actions and $1,462,915.50 was collected in civil actions. Additionally, the Northern District of Indiana worked with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and components of the Department of Justice to collect an additional $1,189,415.52 in civil cases pursued jointly by these offices. Duneland School Corporation gave a “notice of data security incident” on Thursday. The school Corporation said they are committed to protecting the privacy of the information they maintain. Indiana State Department of Health weekly COVID advisory levels

The Indiana State Department of Health has updated the weekly COVID county advisory levels. LaPorte, Porter, Starke, Jasper and Newton counties remain at the highest score of 3, red level. Lake County has moved up from a score of 2.5, orange level to a score of 3, red level. St. Joseph County has moved down from a score of 3, red level to a score of 2.5 orange level. In the past week positivity has risen in Lake and Newton counties and has lowered in LaPorte, Porter, Starke, Jasper and St. Joseph counties.

Serenity Room at Franciscan Health Hammond ED rededicated after family’s gift in memory of patient

The Franciscan Health Hammond Emergency Department Serenity Room has been rededicated in memory of a patient who was both born at the hospital and died there last year. Tina Flynn provided the gift to refurnish the room as a memorial to her late husband, Gerald Kray, who passed away in August 2020 after a battle with cancer. Tina was grateful for the compassionate care Gerald received in the Emergency Department. Red Cross: Blood donors needed to avoid delays in patient care

The American Red Cross says blood supply is at historically low levels and it continues to decline. Michigan City Mayor Parry makes executive order to adjust biweekly wages

Mayor Duane Perry of Michigan City made an executive order Wednesday to adjust salaried positions biweekly wages of salaried city employees to reflect the 27 pay periods for the city for 2021. According to the order, wages for salaried positions were originally calculated based on 26 pay periods as opposed to the 27 actual pay periods. The bottom of the order states that "1 I.C. 36-4-7-3 only applies to appointive officers, deputies, and employee of the city. I.C. 36-4-7-2(c) states that "the compensation of an elected city officer may not be changed in year for which it is fixed...," thus,

Valparaiso Police investigate vehicle crash

The Valparaiso Police Department investigated a vehicle crash Wednesday in the area of U.S. Highway 30 and Hayes Leonard Road. The westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 30 and southbound travel onto Hayes Leonard Road were closed for several hours for investigation. Police responded to the area at around 8:30 a.m. locating the two-vehicle crash, with one vehicle being a semi-truck. Police said Wednesday that there had been one serious injury reported, with the party being transported from the scene to a medical flight location. WIMS will continue following this story.

LaPorte County Health Department gives Mask Advisory Notice

The LaPorte County Health Department has given a “Mask Advisory Notice” to the public.  The health department says it is currently seeing a rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the county. The LaPorte County Health Department says the county is up to 18,740 public cases and 283 deaths. Indiana Dunes National Park receives new Wildland fire engine

Monday the Great Lakes Fire Management Zone, based at Indiana Dunes National Park, received a new piece of equipment for their firefighting fleet. This new engine is one of 8 new Wildland fire engines recently delivered to the U.S. Department of the Interior. Fire staff received a new Type 3 Wildland fire engine. Cattle hauler crash causes big delays on I-80/94, 16 cows dead

Indiana state police say a cattle hauler crash Monday caused gridlocks on westbound I-80/94 in Lake County. Police say a tractor trailer was attempting to enter the westbound lanes of I-80 from the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) Monday afternoon at around 4:30 p.m. when the crash occured. Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver entered the curve at a speed too fast and lost control of the truck.
