Chesterton Nursing Student Awarded Maria Petti Memorial Scholarship

Nursing student Annie Spangler dreams of being a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and working in the operating room when she graduates from Indiana Wesleyan University next spring. The Chesterton woman said receiving this year’s Maria Petti Memorial Scholarship will help her toward that goal, helping with the costs of her final year of nursing school. “This scholarship was a big blessing,” she said.The scholarship, available to Porter and LaPorte County students seeking a career in the surgical field, provides awards of up to $5,000. No one injured in minor Valparaiso school bus crash

No one was injured Tuesday morning, following what Chesterton Police say was a minor collision of a Valparaiso school bus and a passenger vehicle. According to a Facebook post from the Town of Chesterton, the incident occurred at the intersection of South 11th Street and 1100N. at around 7:45 a.m. and was described by Chesterton Police as a sideswipe with minimal damage. Police say only one student was aboard the bus and that student was not injured. The bus driver and the driver of the passenger vehicle involved were also not injured.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office: retirement and division transfer announcement

La Porte County Sheriff John T. Boyd officially announced the retirement of Deputy Gary Biggs and the division transfer of Deputy Jacob Pisowicz. Deputy Biggs was hired by the La Porte County Sheriff's Office as a Merit Deputy in February of 1999.  During his two-plus decades of service, he held a variety of positions in various divisions throughout the agency – patrol deputy, drug task force detective, Emergency Response Team member, K-9 handler, warrants deputy and most recently, school resource officer (SRO). Shots fired incident leads to search warrant and arrest in Michigan City

A shots fired incident that had occurred on Aug. 11 in Michigan City led to an arrest on Tuesday. The LaPorte County Drug Task Force, the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST), Michigan City SWAT, and the Michigan City Police Department’s Investigative Division executed a search warrant and arrest warrant at the 200 block of Willard Avenue in Michigan City. On Aug. 11, the Michigan City Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the 100 block of Merrihill Drive in the Lakeland Estates apartment complex regarding numerous reports of gunshots being fired. More than 40,000 at Purdue, and growing, are documented as fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with one week until classes begin

With one week until classes begin and move-in underway, the Protect Purdue Health Monitoring and Surveillance Team released updated data Tuesday (Aug. 17), showing that 40,496, or 75%, of all West Lafayette students, faculty and staff have submitted proof and been verified as fully vaccinated, with some areas showing significantly higher percentages. Of students living in University Residences this fall, 84% have submitted valid proof of full vaccination to date, as have 86% of faculty. Fully vaccinated individuals who have not yet submitted their documentation, as well as partially vaccinated individuals in process, are not included in the campus vaccination

Michigan City Man Arrested After Search Warrant

The LaPorte County Drug Task Force, The Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST), and Michigan City SWAT effected two arrests as the result of a search warrant that was executed at the 500 block of Walton Avenue in Michigan City. Taken into custody was Shawanda Archambeault, who had outstanding felony warrants, along with Michigan City Resident, Glen-Ian Howe. Following an investigation, a search warrant was obtained for the home of Glen-Ian Howe. As a result of this search, a substantial amount of suspected methamphetamine and heroin were recovered. Additionally, various other suspected illegal drugs were seized, along with numerous illegal firearms,

La Porte County Public Library Cuts Ribbon on traveling Smithsonian Water/Ways Exhibit

La Porte County Public Library, in partnership with LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District, cut the ribbon on a traveling Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service this past weekend. The Exhibit entitled, Water/Ways, is a salute to the role water plays in our lives and will be on display inside the Rolling Prairie library location between August 14, 2021 and September 26, 2021. Chesterton Fire Department responds to vehicle fire

The Town of Chesterton says that Chesterton firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the 2800 block of Pinehurst Ave. on Thursday. Firefighters responded to the scene at around 5:20 p.m., to find CFD Chaplain Lowell Black, a neighbor, already there, having emptied a five-pound ABC chemical extinguisher into the engine compartment. Firefighters flushed the engine compartment with approximately 50 gallons of water. A thermal imaging camera was then used to confirm the fire was out and the battery was disconnected. The vehicle’s owner, advised that she’d been having battery issues and two days earlier had had it replaced. While

American Red Cross partners with youth media group for region-wide campaign to amplify teen voices about the COVID-19 vaccine

In March, the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross partnered with more than 40 organizations to help individuals and groups begin the conversation with others about the COVID-19 vaccine. Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends youth as young as 12 years old get the vaccine. To reach this demographic, the Red Cross is partnering with an organization in Gary, Indiana that encourages youth to talk about the COVID-19 vaccination through a region-wide campaign.
