Mayor Angie has issued $91,300 in grants to local youth-serving organizations from her Mayor's Empowerment Fund, the monies for which were raised through sponsorships, ticket sales and other fundraising associated with her inaugural charitable gala. Some of the grant recipients stopped by City Hall on Thursday to meet with the mayor in person. So glad to see so many people doing good work for Michigan City kids this summer!

On Saturday, the Northwest Indiana Triathletes will be hosting the 44th annual La Porte Sprint Triathlon, beginning at 8 a.m. The race, which should conclude by 10:30 a.m., entails a quarter-mile lake swim, a 12.4-mile bike ride and a 3.4-mile run. The road course for the race includes the streets bordering Soldiers Memorial Park and Small Road from Garden Street to CR-700W. The course will be closed to through traffic beginning at 7:45 a.m. Police and course monitors will be turning away traffic, except for residents who live along the course. The historic bandstand in Washington Park is now available for rent. This iconic structure, originally donated by Michigan City Industrialist John H. Barker in the 1890s, has a rich history. The original band shell was destroyed by fire in 1911, and the current bandstand was built in the same year. INDOT has given an update to work happening on I-65 between State Road 2 and State Road 10. Crews are strengthening and widening the shoulders ahead of three bridge replacement projects in the area. Currently, the northbound and southbound lanes are shifted to the right while widening of the median inside shoulders is completed. During overnight work operations, the left lane is closed from approximately 8pm to 6am. This will be ongoing through late July. Beginning on Monday, July 15, through October 15, (weather permitting), Superior Construction will be closing the southbound ramp off Highway 12 that connects into State Road 249 in order to repair the walls of the lower portion of the bridge. The ramp located just west of the Port of Indiana bridge will remain open to connect Highway 12 to State Road 249 for vehicles/trucks to access. The Valparaiso Fire Department will be conducting Rescue Task Force training at and around Memorial Elementary School during the next two weeks to prepare in the event of an active shooter incident in the community. Training will end with multi-agency scenarios with the Valparaiso Police Department on July 15-17. Earlier this week the Valparaiso Police Department announced they will be conducting training at Memorial Elementary July 18 and 19.

The South Shore Line has announced a Millennium Station depot switch effective Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14, 2024: Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, all South Shore Line passengers utilizing Millennium Station will temporarily board/detrain from the Metra Depot (Tracks 5 and 6), located northwest of the SSL platform. An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will have overnight ramp closures on I-65 at exit 201 (U.S. 231/U.S. 24) and exit 205 (U.S. 231) beginning on or after Monday, July 15. Closures will begin at approximately 7 p.m. CT and reopen by 7 a.m. CT the following morning. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department says they have become aware that scammers are attempting to trick local residents into giving up thousands of dollars. Martinez says the department has received several calls from people who say someone identifying themselves as a Lake County Sheriff’s Department employee called them demanding money.  The scammers are able to make the caller ID show a real sheriff’s department phone number to make the call seem legitimate. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is thanking Kankakee Valley REMC for supporting the agency’s Umanned Aerial Systems (Drone) Program. Certified drone operators were recently notified their grant application had been approved and were awarded $2,500.00. The grant money will be utilized to send the drone operators to an advanced training course later this year. The LCSO utilizes drones to assist with incidents such as missing persons searches, major crash investigations, and crime scene photography.    

LAPORTE and STARKE COUNTIES, Ind. - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews will conduct seal coating operations resulting in a road closure on U.S. 421 beginning on or after Monday, July 15. U.S. 421 will be closed between State Road 8 and State Road 10 west for approximately three days. Police have identified the victim of a fatal crash that occurred in Berrien County, Michigan as 29-year-old Austin Jay Jones of La Porte, IN. On July 4 just after midnight, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Deans Hill Road near Hochberger Road in Berrien Township for a single vehicle unknown injury motor vehicle crash. Deputies arrived on scene and found that a vehicle was traveling northeast on Deans Hill Road. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curved roadway and ran off the roadway to the right.
