SOUTH BEND – On May 14, 2026, Terrence Baker, 46 years old, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred. A 37-year-old La Porte woman miraculously survived an unfortunate and frightening incident Monday morning, according to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office. The woman was operating her 2012 GMC Acadia northbound in the 3100 north block of Fail Road when a large tree located off the west side of Fail Road fell to the east and on top of the woman’s vehicle. Police say the woman was trapped inside the vehicle and later extricated from the driver’s seat. She was airlifted from the scene and transported to a regional hospital for advanced medical treatment. No further updates were given on

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office released statistics from a recent U.S. 20 traffic safety project. Last Wednesday, the sheriff's office participated in a multi-state traffic safety project along U.S. 20. Agencies from twelve (12) states - Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts - partnered to raise awareness and reduce crashes on U.S. 20. The Sheriff’s Office was included in the project due to the high volume of crashes on U.S. 20 in La Porte County. Deputies worked the project during peak travel times - specifically during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours.

La PORTE, IN (May 20, 2026) - The City of La Porte Police Department today announced Captain Chae Uhlemann will take over as the new Assistant Chief, according to Police Chief Matt Drangmeister. Uhlemann will replace former Assistant Chief Jim Ferguson, who recently stepped down from the position. Free meals will be made available to all children 18 years of age and under and to persons over 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children. Children must be present to receive their meals. In an update, Michigan City Police say they are conducting a homicide investigation after a juvenile was killed after a shooting on West 11th Street this past Friday. On Friday May 15, at approximately 4:30 PM, the Michigan City Police Department received a call regarding a juvenile that was shot in the 300 block of West 11th Street.
