The Michigan City Fire Department responded to two structure fires Monday night and Tuesday morning. One fire was at Faith City Church, 1314 S Woodland Ave., at 11:05 Monday night. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire. They initiated an aggressive fire attack. Due to fire conditions, firefighters were required to force entry to gain access to the structure and extinguish the fire. At the time of the incident, no occupants were inside the building, and no injuries have been reported. The Sheriff's Office says they are seeing an influx of calls where individuals are told they must make payments using accounts or cards such as Chime, Green Dot, PayPal, gift cards, or other electronic payment methods. On May 30, at approximately 12:05 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper was conducting speed enforcement on Interstate 94 near the Burns Harbor exit when a Mercedes SUV was observed traveling 90 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, after the Mercedes initially came to a complete stop, the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed. SOUTH BEND –  Pamela McDonald, 41 years old, of Knox, Starke County, Indiana, was recently sentenced by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to wire fraud, announced United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred.  McDonald was sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered to pay $21,280.42 in restitution. According to documents in the case, Pamela McDonald worked as the “jail matron” at the Starke County Jail. Her duties included paying invoices with funds from the jail commissary account. She devised a scheme to unjustly enrich herself by depositing commissary funds into her personal PayPal account

Last night at approximately 10:00 PM, deputies responded to the area of CR 1000 North near CR 850 East reference a single-vehicle crash. The initial on-scene investigation completed by Deputy Matt Buell and assisting deputies determined the following: The crash scene was located several hundred feet east of CR 850 East on CR 1000 North. A black 2012 GMC Acadia had been traveling east on CR 1000 North. The vehicle crossed left of center, traveled across the westbound lane of travel, and left the north side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck two trees prior to coming to rest.

In La Porte County, traffic has switched to the outside lanes in each direction between C.R. 250 E and C.R. 500 E. Work is being conducted in the inside lanes and center turn lane/median area through around June 12. Traffic will also switch to the outside lanes so that work can occur in the inside lanes and median between U.S. 35 and C.R. 400 W on or after Thursday, June 4. This work is scheduled for approximately 10 days. Work is scheduled to begin on U.S. 20 between Fail Rd and C.R. 250 E on or after Monday, June 8.
