INDOT contractor Traffic Control Specialists Inc will conduct overnight mobile operations on I-65 in Lake and Jasper Counties. The La Porte Park and Recreation Department announced closures or restrictions at Soldiers Memorial Park for this weekend's La Porte LakeFest.  Stone Lake and the adjoining launches and docks will be closed from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the running of the La Porte LakeFest AquaX Grand Prix. Watercraft leaving the launches or docks must do so before 9 a.m. and will not regain access to the lake until after 5 p.m. While still accessible to the public, Stone Lake Beach will be limited to LakeFest events from 6 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Sunday. For the second year, Franciscan Health Michigan City is partnering with local churches to educate their parishioners on diabetes prevention and detection, targeting a health issue more likely to impact those in the African American and Hispanic communities. The free “Fan Out Diabetes” program is offered in two companion sessions following Sunday church services. At the first session, diabetes educators will provide a presentation on diabetes with information on healthy eating and exercise tips. The Michigan City Police Department announced Tuesday that a second arrest has been made in connection to a shooting that resulted in the death of 34-year-old Michigan City resident Leland Collins. Police said 40-year-old Clarence Sims of Michigan City was arrested on July 20 as a result of the homicide investigation. On July 21, probable cause was found to charge Sims with one count of aiding, inducing or causing murder.  On August 9th, 2021, just after 7:30 p.m. officers were called to a parking lot in the 1500 block of East Michigan Boulevard regarding a person who was shot. The Ogden Dunes Police announced that U.S. 12 Westbound will be closed through Thursday July 28, for NIPSCO work related to the double track project. Police say that drivers will be able to take U.S. 12 east out of town. However, when returning to town drivers will need to take the frontage road.

The Indiana State Police have issued a scam alert involving a text message claiming to be the Department of Workforce Development.  Indiana State Police issued the following: "Detectives from the Indiana State Police Indianapolis District have recently received complaints about a potential scam in the form of a text message. The messenger claims to be from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and indicates the recipient has unclaimed money from the state. Hoosiers can help the Department of Natural Resources estimate Indiana’s wild turkey population by counting turkeys for our 2022 Wild Turkey Brood Survey. The DNR says if you see a female turkey (hen) with and without poults (young turkeys) now through Aug. 31, report them online. A pair of Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers helped put a fire out in Gary after encountering a firefighter who needed help. Just before 1 p.m. Monday, Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to assist at a call for a home engulfed in flames in the 2000 block of West 48th Place in Gary. Two officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department arrived and encountered a firefighter with the Lake Ridge Fire Department who police say was somewhat fatigued and overcome by smoke. The City of La Porte will host Friday Night Live: Cheeseburger in Paradise Friday, Aug. 19 at La Stitch at the corner of Lincolnway and Monroe. Michigan City community organizations have again joined forces to host the “Citywide Back to School Rally,” providing school supplies and an end-of-summer celebration for Michigan City families. The rally will take place on Saturday, July 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Elston’s Gill Field, 317 Detroit St. in Michigan City. Approximately 2,000 students and their families are expected to attend this year, and each student will receive a backpack filled with grade-appropriate school supplies. The City of La Porte announced the intersection of 3rd and F Streets will be closed all of next week as the Water Department makes necessary infrastructure improvements. The city says the work is part of the infrastructure plan that was proposed a couple of years ago to bring their water and wastewater systems into the 21st century. A Michigan City man has been charged in the fatal shooting of Kylie McKee, police said. On Wednesday, the case investigation was presented to the Honorable Judge Jamie Oss in Superior Court #1 and probable cause was found to affect the arrest of 25-year-old Robert Dervate Curry of Michigan City for murder. On Sunday at around 1:50 a.m. officers were called to the area of Springland Avenue and Roeske Avenue for a call of shots fired. Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. has announced the appointment of Chris Alber, PhD as the new vice president of the organization’s Excel Center, a tuition-free school that provides the Indiana CORE 40 high school degree to Hoosier adults. In his new role, Alber will be helping students earn a high school diploma and will be connecting them to certifications and training for local employment through Goodwill Industries of Michiana. Alber’s initial goals are to increase enrollment at the four Excel Campuses (South Bend, Elkhart, Gary, and Hammond) and to connect with local stakeholders to communicate the mission of Goodwill Industries.

Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) cadets Marcus Mantel and Matthew Wilson attended the National Military Drill Camp at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, which was held July 6-12.  The objective of the camp was to prepare cadets to command units in military drill competitions and provide them with drill skills that are specific to the JROTC (“armed and unarmed exhibition” drill).  The camp, like all MCJROTC activities, was conducted at no expense to MCHS or the cadets.  The Marine Corps paid for the camp and transportation to and from Texas.
