On April 13, 2021, at 8:16 AM, deputies were advised of a reckless driver traveling eastbound on US 20 from the area of CR 400 West. The vehicle was reported as traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of US 20. While traveling north on Fail Road to the area, Deputy Bobby Greer observed a vehicle traveling southbound matching the description of the reckless driver and passing another motorist in a no passing zone. On July 24, 2020, at 11:54 AM, deputies were dispatched to the 8200 east block of US 6, rural Johnson Township, refence a personal injury crash. Deputies arrived and found one of the involved drivers unresponsive with no pulse. That driver, Taren E. ABAIR (29 YOA) of Grovertown, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene. Given the circumstances and dynamics of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) was activated to assist with the investigation. South Shore announced that they will be CLOSING the 11th Street Station and parking lots beginning May 1st and will not re-open until the construction is completed in 2024. Additionally, the two 11th Street parking lots will be closed as they begin the staging for the new station and platforms. The footprint of the east and south parking lots will be used for laydown, staging, and contractor mobile offices. The train will no longer stop at this station. The Indiana Department of Health is proactively notifying all vaccination clinics using the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to pause its use following news reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has called for additional review of its safety. The state has not received official notification of a directive to pause but is doing so out of an abundance of caution. Northwest Health – La Porte announced that it is now offering Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) imaging services in La Porte. The PET/CT unit saw its first patient on March 19. A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is a test to detect and measure disease processes in the body such as cancer. It uses a safe, radioactive tracer to show biochemical changes taking place in the body. One person was deceased at the scene this morning of a horrific crash involving a semi-tractor trailer and passenger vehicle, the Chesterton Fire Department is reporting. As of 7:30 a.m. today the victim’s name had not been released and emergency services were still at the scene. Interim Fire Chief Eric Camel said that all east- and westbound lanes of U.S. 20 were closed to traffic between Tremont Road and C.R. 200E, to expedite reconstruction of the crash as well as cleanup of the scene. The City of La Porte residents looking to become certified in CPR can do so through the city's fire department, according to Fire Chief Andy Snyder.   Beginning this month and lasting through the end of this year, the department will be offering a monthly CPR class. The class is free to all LaPorte County residents, and participants walk away with their certification. Snyder said becoming certified in CPR can give people the ability and confidence to help in emergency situations.   "CPR is a great skill to have in your arsenal, regardless of your age or profession," Snyder said.

Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering will offer summer enrichment camps for middle and high school students interested in learning more about mechanical and civil engineering disciplines. The Purdue Northwest Summer Engineering Camps will take place in June and July. On April 8, 2021, at 2:30 AM, Deputy Jet Balenia was dispatched to the area of Wozniak Road and CR 450 North, rural Coolspring Township, reference a hit and run crash involving a fence. Upon arrival in the area, Deputy Balenia learned of a second crash that had just occurred on Wozniak Road near Surrey Lane. Surrey Lane is located approximately three (3) miles south of CR 450 North. Prior to leaving the area of the hit and run crash, Deputy Balenia located a silver bumper in the lawn of a residence in the 7500 west block of CR 450
