Valparaiso Police Department’s K9 Raider to get donation of body armor

The Valparaiso Police Department announced its K9 Raider will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Raider’s vest will be embroidered with the sentiment “In honor of K9 Vega”.  Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Chesterton Police Department release results of enforcement blitz on Indiana 49

The Chesterton Police Department worked three different grant-funded overtime patrols in April, with a “particular—but not sole—focus” on Indiana 49, according to the Chesterton Police Department Facebook page. The patrols, all funded through National Highway Transportation Administration grants: CITLI (Click It To Live It); DUITF (Driving Under the Influence Task Force), and Blitz 117, targeting school-zone and bus stop-arm violations. Valparaiso Police Department swears-in 2 new officers

The Valparaiso Police Department has added two additional officers with the swearing-in of Brody Daughrity and Grant Arnold on Monday.  Mayor Matt Murphy performed the ceremony within the council chambers of City Hall.  Chief Andrew McIntyre, with numerous officers and civilian staff in attendance, joined the families of the new officers for the event.  During the ceremony, Chief McIntyre welcomed Brody and Grant to the department family, while congratulating each on their efforts in the hiring process. Indiana General Assembly approves additional seats for Excel Center locations

The Indiana General Assembly last week approved 1,650 additional seats for The Excel Center, Goodwill’s high school for adults. The additional seats will help Goodwill’s Excel Center serve 6,550 adult students in 23 Excel Centers across Indiana. Michiana was granted 300 additional seats to service 1,035 students in Northern Indiana. The Excel Center offers adults the opportunity to earn a Core 40 diploma, allowing students to pick up right where they left off in school, providing support and resources for students to meet their goals. Ogden Dunes seasonal parking restrictions now in effect

The Town of Ogden Dunes is reminding the public that seasonal parking restrictions are now in effect. Parking restrictions are currently in effect through Sept. 30. Permits are required in order to park within the restricted area. The town is asking the public to remember to stop at town hall to pick up your permits. They will not be automatically sent to you. U.S. 35 crash results in one dead

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- One person died after a crash occurred early Sunday on U.S. 35, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. Shortly before 1:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 35 and County Road 400 North, in rural Center Township, regarding a two-vehicle crash. The initial on-scene investigation determined a 2006 Chevrolet had been traveling northbound on U.S. 35. Plymouth man dies in U.S. 30 crash

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A Plymouth man died in a crash Friday afternoon, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. Just before 3:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 39, in rural Hanna Township, regarding a two-vehicle crash. The initial on-scene investigation determined that a 2008 Honda, driven by 39-year-old Brent L. Freyenberger of Plymouth, Indiana, was traveling westbound on U.S. 30. Police say Freyenberger disregarded a red light at the intersection and was struck by a commercial motor vehicle which was a 2021 Kenworth semi-tractor traveling southbound on State Road

Comment period open for proposed U.S. Bike Route 37 in Indiana

News release by Indiana Department of Transportation: The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has submitted U.S. Bike Route 37 to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to be designated as part of the U.S. Bike Route System (USBRS). The proposed route connects the Erie Lackawanna Trail (USBR 36) in northwest Indiana to the Monon Trail (USBR 35) in central Indiana.
