Shooting at Conoco Gas Station in Laporte

On 3/21/22 at approximately 3:15 pm, Officers were dispatched to 104 East Lincolnway in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, Officers found a male subject in the roadway who had suffered a gunshot wound to his foot. At that time, a lone, male subject was also detained. The victim was transported to Northwest Hospital with non -life threatening injuries. A search of the area also yielded a firearm that was collected. La Porte County Health Department updates COVID Testing Site information

The La Porte County Health Department has announced there are new hours for the La Porte County Health Department COVID testing site at 302 W. 8th St. in Michigan City. No appointment is necessary. Hours are: Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. - 7  p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. It is closed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Diagnostic rapid and lab testing is available. Any child under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian with proper documentation in order to be administered a test.

NICTD provides full South Shore Line Double Track Construction Update

The following is an update from NICTD on the South Shore Line Double Track Project: Gary- Miller Station Area: All of the buildings have been demolished for the construction of the station and parking lots in Miller. The removal of underground obstructions will continue into Mid-March. New sewer work has begun in the west parking lot. NICTD’s Double Track Contract 3, Hasse Construction, is working on the new east parking lot site (east of McDonald’s), which has been fenced. Construction of the new east lot will begin in March. Wireless Network Creating “Swath of Connectivity” for Michigan City Students

Michigan City Area Schools, in partnership with Neo Network Development, has entered Phase 2 of a comprehensive project providing free wireless broadband internet access to a growing number of its students. Funding for the wireless broadband project has been made possible by a $600,000 grant from the Indiana Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER). Michigan City Human Rights Commission Scholarship Contest

The Michigan City Human Rights Commission will begin accepting entries for the 2022 Hawkins-Williams Educational Scholarship Award and the 2022 Judi Huber Educational Scholarship Award on Monday, March 21.  The winner of the Hawkins-Williams Educational Scholarship will receive $1,000.  The contest is open to any graduating high school senior attending school within the Michigan City Area Schools boundaries.  The entries must include an essay related to the stated theme, a certified copy of their high school transcripts and three three  letters of recommendation.  The Judi Huber Educational Scholarship is also for graduating high school seniors.  In addition to the required

U.S. 41 to have lane closures near Schneider in Lake County

Bridge work will begin on U.S. 41 between State Road 2 and State Road 10 in Lake County on or after Monday, March 21. The contract includes superstructure replacements for the bridges over Singleton Ditch and Brown Ditch and will result in alternating lane closures in the area through late September.  Restrictions will begin with one lane and shoulder closed in both the northbound and southbound directions for the construction of temporary median crossovers and to widen the shoulders, which will take approximately four weeks.  When the crossovers are complete, the bridge replacements will be conducted in two phases. MCHS Student pitches her business plan, selected to participate in Region 6 Finals of Innovate WithIN

A Michigan City High School student with career goals in the fashion world, is hoping to catch her lucky break next month, Michigan City Area Schools says. Simara Jenkins, a junior at MCHS junior is pitching her business plans to the Society of Innovators at Purdue University Northwest. Jenkins, who plans to graduate early, was selected to participate in the Innovate WithIN Region 6 Finals in April. Indiana Dunes State Park offering firewood cutting permits, only downed trees are available to cut on weekends

Indiana Dunes State Park says its labor staff has been busy cutting down dead trees that have been deemed hazardous by the state arborist. All these trees will be dropped before April 1 to prevent destruction to any animals that may begin nesting this spring. Indiana Dunes State Park says that due to this large amount of downed trees they’re offering firewood cutting permits. The general public is allowed to harvest firewood for personal use only with a permit. These permits can be obtained at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center between 9:30-3:30 p.m. CST. Police looking for missing Gary man

The Gary Police Department is seeking the community's assistance in locating 57-year-old Stanley Steele. Steele has been missing since March 4 and detectives have exhausted all leads in attempting to locate him. He is a black male, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 155 pounds. He is bald, has brown eyes and wears glasses. Stanley Steele requires medication for medical conditions and is known to frequent 5th Avenue between Jackson Street and Garfield Street in Gary.
