Spring is finally here, which for many people means it is time to fish. Before heading out, remember that 2021-2022 fishing licenses expired on March 31. To renew yours for the 2022-2023 season or purchase one for the first time, visit on.IN.gov/INhuntfish or a local retailer. Early voting begins at the Chesterton Town Hall

The Town of Chesterton announced early voting in the 2022 primary election has begun at the Chesterton Town Hall, located at 726 Broadway. Other early-voting locations include:  *North County Complex, 3560 Willowcreek Road, Portage. *Porter County Administration Building, 155 Indiana Ave., Suite 102A, Valparaiso. *United Steelworkers Local 6787 Union Hall, 1100 Max Mochal Highway, Chesterton. Fatal crash involving school bus in Union Township, no children involved

The Porter County Sheriff’s Police reported that a fatal accident occurred Monday morning, at the intersection of C.R. 450N and C.R. 650W in Union Township, involving a passenger vehicle and a school bus, according to a Facebook post by the Town of Chesterton. Police told the town of Chesterton that no children were aboard the bus at the time.  The Town of Chesterton posted, “According to the PCSP, at 10:44 a.m. the driver of the passenger vehicle was eastbound on C.R. 450N when he disregarded a stop sign and collided with the school bus, which was traveling southbound on C.R.

South Shore Line (NICTD) Double Track NWI construction update

The following is a new update on the South Shore Line Double Track NWI project:  Gary- Miller Station area:   All buildings have been demolished for the construction of the station and parking lots in Miller. New sewer work has begun in the west parking lot. Parking is available but temporarily restricted while work near Miller Station progresses. Vehicular access from Melton Road (US 20) will be closed, but the driveway from Old US 12/Dunes Highway will remain open.NIPSCO will have periodic lane closures on westbound Melton Road throughout April and May in support of NICTD Double Track project and INDOT

Michigan City Accident update -Pedestrian struck by vehicle

April 4, 2022, at approximately 0630hrs Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift One were dispatched to the 2000 Block of E US Hwy 12 in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Officer A. Brinkman and Officer D. Abraham arrived on scene and observed a pedestrian lying in the roadway that appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian had succumbed to their injuries was pronounced deceased on scene. Investigators are on scene obtaining information, processing evidence, and speaking with witnesses. Additional information pertaining to this incident will not be released at this time in order to protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation. The Michigan City

BBB issues warning for Department of Workforce Development Scam

BBB receiving reports of text scam posing as Department of Workforce Development The BBB serving Northern Indiana has issued a warning to consumers about a new text message scam posing as the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. In previous years, scammers have preyed on individuals who had applied for unemployment benefits. In the new text scam, reported to BBB in March, consumers receive a text from DWD claiming to have a $3,800 payment available for returning to work, as part of a program called “Back2Work.” The message claims that the money will be direct deposited once the user clicks the link

Indiana to double number of post-election audits

Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan announced on Friday that the state will double its number of post-election audits following each general election. Secretary Sullivan made the announcement during a new facility ribbon cutting for the Voting System Technical Oversight Program (VSTOP) at Ball State University. The Secretary of State’s office conducts audits in partnership with VSTOP. Following the 2020 general election, Indiana conducted five post-election audits in counties throughout the state, including in LaPorte, Madison, Marion and Vigo counties). Lane closures on US 20 in Porter County and Colorado Street in Lake County begins 

Lane closures will be in place for approximately three weeks starting on or after Monday, for bridge construction and painting work at locations Porter and Lake Counties.  U.S. 20 will be reduced to one lane in each direction with alternating lane closures under I-94 between County Line Road and Dombey Road.  In Lake County, Colorado Street will be reduced to a single lane of traffic on the bridge over I-94, with a temporary traffic signal installed to direct traffic.

Therapy dogs return to Franciscan Health Munster after hiatus

After being halted due to visitor restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Franciscan Health’s pet therapy program has has returned at Franciscan Health Munster. Maggie, with her handlers Becky and Mike Buchana, and Ruger, handled by Jackie LaMantia were first to arrive and provide comfort to patients on March 30. Visits will continue during future Wednesdays at the hospital. All dogs participating in Franciscan Health’s pet therapy program are certified by Therapy Dogs International or Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

La Porte County Health Department reminding public that FDA has approved second COVID booster for certain groups

The La Porte County Health Department is sharing the information that the FDA has approved a second COVID-19 booster for the following groups: -A second booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. -A second booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years of age and older with certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster

Town of Ogden Dunes reminding public about 2022 parking permits and dog tags

The Town of Ogden Dunes is reminding the public that you can now purchase your 2022 Parking Permits and dog tags. Town Hall Window Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents are eligible for one vehicle parking sticker at no cost when home association dues are paid. Additional vehicle stickers are available for purchase at $35 each (made payable to Town of Ogden Dunes). Hardship passes are not currently available. Hammond man arrested after pursuit on I-80 in Lake County

A Hammond man was arrested Thursday after a police pursuit on I-80.  State troopers were working a multi-jurisdictional criminal patrol in Lake County when officers from several agencies received information of a wanted vehicle in the vicinity of Burr Street and 29th Avenue in Gary.  The vehicle had reportedly been used in an armed robbery on Wednesday, March 30, and had fled from officers in Illinois earlier on Thursday.  The vehicle was located by a Griffith police officer and as that officer attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled.  The pursuit continued onto I-80 westbound where a trooper, who’s also

Gov. Holcomb directs flags to be flown at half-staff

Governor Eric Holcomb is directing flags to be flown at half-staff statewide to honor the life and sacrifice of USMC Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz of Fort Wayne. Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz died in the line of duty while taking part in NATO military exercises in Norway.   Flags should be flown at half-staff sunrise until sunset on Sunday, April 3. Gov. Holcomb is asking businesses and residents in Indiana to lower their flags.

Dumpster program back in La Porte 

Mayor of La Porte Tom Dermody says the dumpster program is back.  Dermody asks that once the dumpster is filled, please do not leave on the side or on top.  There is a dumpster at the Water Department located at 1119 Lake Street, Monday through Friday for 24 hours a day. There is also a dumpster at the Street Department located at 1206 2nd Street, open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Valparaíso Police investigating theft of wallet at Walmart

Valparaiso Police are investigating the theft of a wallet from the Valparaiso Walmart, located at 2400 Morthland Dr. The theft occurred on March 29. The male subject was observed picking up the wallet that had fallen to the ground and exiting the store with it, making no attempt to return it or provide it to store employees, according to police. Traffic stop produces dealing in cocaine arrest on Toll Road

A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a Domestic Highway Enforcement on the Indiana Toll Road, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. Just after 4:15 p.m., a deputy was working the Domestic Highway Enforcement (DHE) program along the Toll Road in the area of the 54-mile marker, which is in the Rolling Prairie area. The deputy began to travel near a passenger vehicle being operated in the driving lane. The deputy paced the speed of the passenger vehicle and noted it was traveling in excess of the speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted near the 55-mile marker.

Attorney General Todd Rokita provides guidance to school leaders on COVID liability

Michigan City’s Edgewood Elementary School selected as recipient of Mobile Van program through Enchanted Backpack Organization

Edgewood Elementary School announced that they have been selected as a recipient of the Mobile Van program through the Enchanted Backpack Organization. The school will receive nearly $50,000 worth of brand new classroom supplies, recess items, books, winter coats, games, art supplies and more. This annual award, first presented in 1976, honors former school employees who have made outstanding contributions to the children of the Michigan City Area Schools. Employees from every area are eligible: administrators, custodians, food service personnel, instructional assistants, maintenance personnel, paraprofessionals, teachers, transportation staff, and secretarial staff.
