LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies Investigate US 35 Fatality Crash

Saturday morning at 6:43 AM, deputies were summoned to the area of US 35 and CR 400 North, rural Center Township, reference a crash.  Sergeant James Lear was the first to arrive on scene and confirmed the driver of the vehicle was deceased.  The initial crash investigation completed by Deputy Bobby Greer and assisting deputies determined the following had occurred.   A red 2002 Ford Focus had been traveling southbound on US 35.  For an unknown reason, the vehicle crossed the double yellow line, traveled into the northbound lane, began to lose control and drove back into and across both of the southbound lanes

The National Park Service has created an audio version of Indiana Dunes National Park’s official map and guide, making it accessible to visitors who have visual impairments and cannot read the printed version. Chesterton announces snow parking ban downtown

The Town of Chesterton has announced the annual snow parking ban on designated streets downtown will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1. According to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page, the ban prohibits parking on select streets in the Downtown between 12 and 8 a.m. during or after snows of two inches or more on: -South Calumet Road between Porter Ave. and the Norfolk Southern grade-crossing. *Broadway between South Calumet Road and Sixth Street. -Second and Third streets between Broadway and West Indiana Ave. The town says signage will be posted on the affected streets.

Valpo Police and Porter County Sheriff’s Office partner in ‘Cover the Cruiser’ event benefiting Special Olympics

The Valparaiso Police Department and the Porter County Sheriff's Office have partnered together and invite the public to a 'Cover the Cruiser' event benefiting Indiana Special Olympics on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. They will be on the south side of the Valparaiso Courthouse on Indiana Avenue.  By making a donation, (cash or via QR code), participants will receive an icon to personalize and tape to one of the two cruisers.  All proceeds go to support Special Olympics sports, health, and community programs right here in Indiana. Indiana State Department of Health COVID county advisory levels updated

The Indiana State Department of health updated their weekly COVID county advisory level map last Wednesday.  La Porte and Porter counties remain with a score of 2.5, in the orange level.  Lake County has moved up from a score of 1.5, in the yellow level to a score of 2, in the orange level. St. Joseph, Starke, Jasper and Newton counties all moved up from a score of 2, in the orange level to a score of 2.5 in the orange level.  In the past week positivity has risen in all of the counties mentioned.

Michigan City Park Department to Present 5-Year Master Plan

The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department is currently writing their 5-year Master Plan (2022-2026). Public input is vital to the planning process to know the wants and needs of the community to be able to successfully plan for the future development of parks and programming. The 1st draft of the Master Plan will be presented at the December 1, 2021 Park Board meeting at 5 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 100 E. Michigan Blvd, Michigan City, IN. City of Valparaiso reminding residents of delayed trash and recycle, City Services closed Thursday and Friday

The City of Valparaiso is reminding residents that due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Thursday’s trash and recycle will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 26 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Valparaiso City Services offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26, resuming regular hours on Monday, Nov. 29. The Michigan City Festival of Lights Celebration will take place on Dec. 4 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Senior Center in Washington Park. Indiana State Police emphasizing safe driving to the public

The day before Thanksgiving is typically the largest traffic volume day of the year, the Indiana State Police-Lowell Post says.  The Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest are encouraging everyone to use extra caution while traveling to your Thanksgiving Day destinations. State police will have extra patrols out to assist motorists and if needed, stop those who choose to drive in a dangerous manner. Deputy nearly shot during fight outside of residence, police say

A La Porte County Sheriff’s deputy was nearly shot after intervening in a fight outside of a residence, according to police.  During the afternoon of Nov. 17, Sergeant Jon Burger was off-duty and located near a residence along Dogwood Drive in rural Center Township. He heard loud music coming from the area of the residence, observed the occupants of a passenger vehicle exit and saw a subject emerge from the home. Charges filed from weekend pursuit in Chesterton
